“… maybe I had a little too much of that ice cream last night?”
Mio Mumoto, a oshawott freshmen at the PCA, was having a rather unusual dream. He was a giant in his home town… or… an amazingly accurate model of his hometown at least. He quietly tiptoed through the walkway like streets as he looked at the various buildings and houses… all of them so very familiar even at this size. He paused for a moment to look at a medium sized building sitting just on the outskirts of the town model… the oldest building still standing in the whole town, a major source of visitors, and his family’s ancestral home… the kabuki theater.
Even if he hadn’t read them in a while he could still remember the family scrolls cataloging the history of his family all the way back from when warring Samurott clans fought each other for supremacy of their particular sword styles. His ancestors had done everything they could… lied, tricked, cheated, and lived as vagabonds on the run to escape being killed in these battles till they managed to create a hiding place where they could be safe… this theater. No warrior thought to seek out and kill a mere troupe of performers, especially when their performances were so wildly loved. And since then the theater had always been his family’s main source of income.
Even after… the incident… Mio shut his eyes and shook his head to clear it. There was no point to letting that get to him, not now… suddenly loud bonging sounds yanked Mio’s attention from the model of his home and towards the second oldest building in the town all the way on the other side of it. The town clock tower, standing tall even in model form. Mio frowned softly… the clock tower was just as much a staple of town life as the theater… but he’d never really liked it. The rivalry between his family and the family that maintained it had mostly died down but there was still one…
“Hey Mumoto! Still remember me right?”
The oshawott winced… as the old saying went “Speak of the Devil”. He looked over and sure enough there was the unpleasant mon from his memories. The tall lanky blitzle boy had the same cocky grin as always as he stood there wearing a familiar grease stained t-shirt and torn jeans, his long white mane slicked to the side to form a faux hairstyle. His chest was puffed out as he chuckled slight, looking down his muzzle at the oshawott. Mio sighed softly, visibly exasperate “… hello Koji… yes I still remember you.”
“That’s Koji Sairosaki to YOU Mumoto!” he demanded, as always. Mio groaned… he remembered Koji all too well. He remembered him as far back as he COULD remember. The kid was same age as him and from the local rivals to his family… a rivalry Koji had made a personal grudge at an early age. Even after the rest of his family backed off it after the… incident… so Mio had had to deal with Koji’s bullying and insults his whole life. It was against his nature to pick or start a fight… so he usually did his best to ignore him…
“Anyway you’re not walking away from me THIS time you coward! I challenge you to a DUEL Mumoto!!”
That snapped Mio out of his contemplation as he put a paw on his chest, feeling his shell underneath it “A duel? From what I know you aren’t a swordsmon…” he said in confusion as there was a sudden flash of light making him wince and shield his eyes. As the light dimmed Mio could feel a weight on his arm. As his vision cleared he found himself looking at… a duel disk. It was silver and sleek, the edge of the blade made to look like a mockup of a katana. Looking at Koji he could see he was wearing one as well, made of a brassy metal with an obvious clockwork feel to it. Mio stared for a moment before clearly stating what was on his mind…
“You can’t be serious.”
“What? Did I stutter?”
“This is a card game of all things! And these are from a cartoon BASED on a card game! To be honest this is just really silly once you think about it…”
“Oh just shut up and duel! You don’t get to wake up till you do!”
“Fine, but I still say this is ridiculous…”
“Whatever, DUEL!!”
“… I’m not saying it, and I’m definitely not saying it like that.

“Since I was challenged I believe the first turn honors are mine…” Mio said pulling a card and looking over his hand. Whoever had shoved this thing on his arm seemed to have gotten his deck right at least. “I’ll start by, as my father says in his more lucid moments, setting the stage… I play Gateway of the Six.” the world around them changed and became a narrow mountain pass, a large Japanese style gateway standing behind Mio with a large circular seal on it. Koji raised an eyebrow at this “A field spell?”
“Continuous spell actually… my field spell comes next. I play Temple of the Six.” bare trees grew and lined the mountain pass as a Japanese style tower rose up in the distance beyond the gate “Now the effects of both of these cards depend entirely on the number of Bushido Counters on them, which they gain when Six Samurai monsters are normal or special summoned. I will also play one final spell card… my Six Samurai United.” Another spell card appeared, less flair this time around.
Koji just looked annoyed as he yawned “Three cards left in your hand, no monsters… what, no budget for actors in your rinky dink little play?” he ask as Mio just took one of the three remaining cards in his hand “I summon my Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan.” He said as a tall figure appeared on his side of the field. It was a man with long dark hair and a serious face decked out in off-black and orange line cybernetic looking samurai armor with a crested helmet. A long bladed katana was in his hands as he stanchly leveled it towards Koji (1800/500).
Mio’s gate, temple, and spell glowed “My gate gains two Bushido Counters while my temple and united card each gain one… and that is all I’m able to do for this turn. Your go.” The water type said, maintaining his normal somber seriousness as Koji snorted and pulled his card. “Can’t say I like your little “Scene” much… lets change it! I play Geartown!” the temple and mountain pass, but not the gate, suddenly shattered as the sound of heavy machinery and the smell of grease and oil filled the air. A sprawling city made of giant gears and clockwork parts rose up around them, spotlights shining gear images onto the cloudy sky. Mio tilted his head a little.
“… hmmm… can’t say it’s not improper… but we’re both playing kind of strongly to our family stereotypes aren’t we?”
“So? Your point is?”
“… nothing I guess…”
“Good! Cause as long as this cards in play I can summon my Ancient Gear monsters with one less tribute! But first I’m taking a page for you and playing a continuous spell… my Ancient Gear Castle!” there was more churning as a medieval castle covered in clockwork weaponry rose up behind Koji “Now all my Ancient Gears get 300 extra attack points… like this level six Ancient Gear Beast!” he slapped the card down as there was more mechanical clanking as a large wrought-iron clockwork wolf monster appeared, its exposed gears slowly turning (2000/2000), it let out a grinding howl as the castle boosted its attack power (2300/2000).
“Now lets cut to the chase… attack his samurai with clockwork pounce!” he shouted as the beast clanked and rattled for a moment before it leapt forward and shattered Kizan making Mio wince “Next I play Ancient Gear Drill! Letting me discard a card…” he sent a monster in his hand to the grave “To take a spell card from my deck and set it! I can’t use it this turn though so it’s your go.” He said, still grinning cockily as his facedown card appeared.
Mio LP: 7500 Koji LP: 8000
“I draw…” Mio said pulling his card and looking at it “Then I summon The Six Samurai – Zanji.” Another cybernetic samurai, this time wearing burnished gold armor with yellow lines, a helmet with two prongs sticking up, and carrying a spear appeared (1800/1300) “Which puts two bushido counters on my gate and one on my united… which I send to the grave to activate its effect. Letting me draw a card for every counter on it.” He said as he pulled two cards “… and then I’ll use the effect of my Grandmaster of the Six Samurai who can special himself when I control a Six Samurai monster.”
A dignified, older man with long white hair and an eye-patch appeared. His armor was less covering than the previous two samurai but he had a pair of cybernetic arms to make-up for it. He carried a simple sword and had a venerable feel about him (2100/800) “Then I’ll use the effect of my Gateway, by removing four of the six counters on it I can add one Six Samurai monster from my deck or graveyard to my hand…” a card slipped out of his deck and into his hand “… and then I’ll attack your beast with my Zanji.”
“What!?”
“You heard me.”
“Fine, be my guest. This ought to be good.”
Zanji charged the mechanical monster as it pounced on him, the samurai managing to thrust his spear through the beast before he was crushed under its weight. Ancient Gear Beast made a painful grinding sound for a moment then exploded much to Koji’s surprise. Mio spoke up before the stunned electric type could demand an explanation “As long as I have a Six Samurai monster with a different name any monster Zanji battles is destroyed at the end of the damage step even if Zanji is destroyed himself. Now my Grandmaster will take the initiative.” The oshawott said as the older warrior slashed Koji with his sword, knocking the electric type on his ass “And with that I’ll end my turn.”
Mio LP: 7500 Koji LP: 5900
Getting back up and sparking with anger Koji yanked his card for the turn “… I summon my Ancient Gear Knight.” He grumbled as a wrought iron clockwork humanoid construct appeared. A huge gear shaped shield on one of its arms and its other made into a jousting lance (1800/500) as the castle powered it up more (2100/500). Koji looked over his single card for another moment before glaring hatefully at Mio “… and I’ll have him attack your grandmaster!” he shouted much to the water types surprise.
The two monsters charged each other as the knight lunged with his lance and Grandmaster swung his sword in an arch… and they passed by each other for a moment like something out of a samurai movie before they both shattered. Leaving the field bare except for the gate, geartown, the castle, and Koji’s facedown card. Koji just folded his arms and snorted “I end my turn.”
Mio drew his card as he looked at Koji hard. He’d assumed the facedown magic card his opponent had set was Limiter Removal, a quickplay spell that doubles the attack of all machines at the cost of destroying them at the end of the turn… if that was the case why didn’t he use it? Why did he attack? He was missing something here about what Koji’s plans were… meaning it was time to play cautiously till he knew more.
Looking over his hand he didn’t really have the resources to play cautiously though, his best bet was to weather whatever Koji had planned and turn it around with what he’d set up… “I end my turn.” Mio said getting a soft chuckle from the blitzle as he drew and looked at his card… before breaking into a full on evil laugh. “I forgot to mention… for every Ancient Gear I normal summon my castle gets a counter… and if it has the same number or more then the tributes I’d need to summon an Ancient Gear monster I can tribute it to do the job! So rise up my mechanical perfection! Come out Ancient Gear Golem!!!”
The castle behind Koji EXPLODED as something huge slowly rose up from it. Like the knight before it was a humanoid clockwork automaton made out of wrought iron… unlike the knight though it was several stories tall. Huge shoulder pads and arm guards gave impressive weight to its spindly limbs as it slowly rose up, a single red light appeared in its roman styled crested helmet to simulate an eye as the grinding and clanking of the gears simulated an impressive roar (3000/3000). Koji was grinning like a maniac as he was praising his new monster.
“Behold! The pinnacle of my main deck! Masterfully crafted to be clockwork perfection I present to you my Ancient Gear Golem!! Isn’t he wondrous? Spectacular? Stupendous?”
“Ugly as sin?”
“… I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that.”
“That’s fine, you were just feeding me the same spiel you always gave about your family’s clock tower. I apologize but after so many times I’d rather not hear it again.”
“Fine, then I’ll cut to the chase. I play my facedown equip spell Gravity Blaster!” Koji shouted as his facedown card lifted revealing the spell as a futuristic looking laser cannon appeared mounted on the Golem’s chest “Listen up cause this gets complicated… it lets me once per turn increase my Golem’s attack by 400… permanently. He keeps the boost even if he becomes immune to effects or leaves the field.” He said as his golem’s attack rose (3400/3000) “It also negates the effects of any monsters he battles and in case you forgot when he attacks you can’t activate spells or traps till it’s over! See? He’s unbeatable!!”
“… so you used the drill to get a card you planned to use exclusively on a monster you hadn’t drawn yet?”
“… maybe?”
“Did you have a plan B at least?”
“Plan B this! Gravity Melee attack!!!”
The Gear Golem’s internal workings kicked into overdrive as its gears spun and it lurched up. The cannon affixed to its chest started to build up power as Mio braced himself… it wasn’t enough. The cannon fired and Mio’s vision went white from the explosion as it felt like the world’s largest truck just ran him down at full speed. He was sent flying backwards ending up flat on his back where he lay shell shocked for a moment before climbing back up to his feet, knees shaking as he did so.
Mio LP: 4100 Koji LP: 5900
“… good… there wouldn’t be any point to this if that’s all it took to take you down. I set one card and end my turn.” Koji said, a smug look on his face “So show me what you’ve got! Lets settle who’s really top dog in this rivalry!!” he shouted as Mio drew, not really caring to point out that the whole rivalry was all in Koji’s own self-absorbed little mind. He hadn’t listened the last twenty times Mio had tried and the water type doubted this’d be different.
“First… I play my second Six Samurai United…” the second copy of the spell card appeared “Then I normal summon Legendary Six Samurai – Mizuho.” Another samurai appeared… this time a lady samurai wearing flame red armor. Most of her head was covered in a mix of helmet and white hood but her long black hair streamed out behind it freely in a ponytail. She held a pair of hand sickles with the blades shaped into half-circles (1600/1000) “And since we’re representing our respective family heritages it’d be a shame if I didn’t tell you the story behind this particular samurai.”
“Oh? And what story is that?”
“To properly tell it I need one more actor… so I’ll use my gates power since it has four counters on it again and take a samurai from deck to add to my hand…” the card slipped from Mio’s deck “And this monster has a special ability… if I have a face up Mizuho I can special summon him. Meet Legendary Six Samurai – Shinai!” A bulky, muscular samurai appeared wearing dull grey armor with yellow lines on it that was more covering then the previous samurai’s. A pair of large studded clubs were in his hands (1500/1500) as he looked to Mizuho fondly as she returned the gaze before they both nodded softly.
“Now before the story gets started I activate my Six Samurai united, sending it to the grave to draw twice.” The spell vanished as he drew his cards “Now then… the Legendary Six Samurai were the first bearers of the Six Samurai name and helped to shape the future of the group… these two in particular. You see they had a close history, some versions of the tale even refers to them as lovers but I’m not going to guess on that… but no matter how close they were it went the way of tragedy as Shinai, working to save one of their mutual comrades, sacrificed his own life to save him.”
“Heavy, your point is?”
“Let me finish, still loyal to their cause Shinai eventually returned possessing his armor to become the Spirit of the Six Samurai and Mizuho, shaken by her loss, left the front lines to eventually become the Hand of the Six Samurai… so let’s reenact that famous moment! I activate Mizuho’s effect!” the two warriors gave each other one long look before nodding as they both rushed towards the Gear Golem “by tributing another Six Samurai monster I can destroy one card on the field!”
Gear Golem began powering the cannon in response to the charge as Shinai leapt right at the muzzle of the weapon, whacking it with his clubs and knocking the blast off course even as he took the blow. A brief look of pure agony crossed Mizuho’s face as she leapt into the air and saw Shinai be destroyed, but instead of letting it distract her she focused her attention on the Gear Golem who was busy destroying her friend. She let out a battle cry as she swung her sickles down to cleave its head off…
Only for them to bounce off a pure white, Greek style dress that appeared out of nowhere as Koji smirked. “That’d be my Forbidden Dress quickplay spell. At the cost of 600 attack points my Golem can’t be targeted or destroyed by cards effect. Looks like your little play fell flat there.” He said, chuckling a little as a disheartened Mizuho landed back on Mio’s field and the Golem’s attack fell (2800/3000). “… not as flat as you’d think…” Mio said as he slipped Shinai’s card into the grave and a specter of him appeared behind the oshawott “Since I can activate Shinai’s effect now.”
“When he’s tributed I can select one Six Samurai monster other than him and add it to my hand…” Shinai’s ghost vanished as a card popped out of Mio’s graveyard “So I’ll special summon my Grandmaster of The Six Samurai once more.” The veteran samurai appeared once more, placing a comforting hand on Mizuho’s shoulder (2100/800) “And I’ll end my turn by setting one card. Your go.” Mio said as the Golem’s attack points returned to their previous amount (3400/3000).
Koji laughed as he drew his card, not even looking at it “You’re done! My monsters is indestructible during the battle phase! I use Gravity Blaster’s effect!” he shouted as his golems attack points rose again (3800/3000)… and Mio’s trap card lifted “It’s not the battle phase IS IT Koji? I activate Six Strike – Thunder Blast!” Mio shouted, fully raising his voice for what might be the first time in the duel “By removing a Bushido Counter from one of my cards like my Gateway I can activate one of it’s effects… and I’ll chose to destroy a card you control… namely your golem!!”
“WHAT!!?”
Mizuho lifted his sickles as electrical energy surged through them before she dashed and dove past Ancient Gear Golem, letting out a battle cry as she sliced it, Gravity Blaster and all, in half before it exploded leaving Koji’s field empty except for Geartown as the electric type seemed to be in the middle of a spasm fit of rage. He let out a half garbled sound of rage as a card call “Ancient Gear Workshop” which apparently let him add an Ancient Gear monster from his gave to his hand as Beast popped out and was played (2000/2000) before pouncing and crushing Mizuho.
Mio LP: 3700 Koji LP: 5900
“…. Since that’s all you can do I’m going to assume it’s my turn…” Mio said drawing his card “And summoned Legendary Six Samurai Enishi.” Another samurai appeared, this one in light green armor with a flat topped helmet and facemask along with a sword almost as long as he was tall (1700/500) “And since I now have five bushido counters on my Gateway I’ll remove four of them to take my Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan out of my graveyard… and since I have a Six Samurai monster with a different name in play I can special summon him.” The black armored samurai appeared again (1800/500) as he and Grandmaster shared a perplexed look that Koji, now a little more calm and lucid, noticed.
“What’s with them?”
“Well… technically Kizan is the Grandmaster when he was a young man, how would you feel if you met yourself when you were younger?”
“Touche.”
“Anyway since I have two or more Six Samurai monsters other than them their effect triggers, Enishi gains 500 attack points and Kizan gains 300.” He said as Enishi’s attack rose (2200/500) followed by Kizan’s (2100/500). Enishi suddenly held his blade aloft as Mio spoke again “And I’ll use Enishi’s effect to bring about the end of this duel. By removing two Six Samurai monsters in my graveyard from play” Shinai and Mizuho slid out of his graveyard “I can send one of your monsters back to your hand… like your Ancient Gear Beast.” With a swing of his huge sword Enishi hurled the beast into the air as it vanished and the card fluttered back into Koji’s hand as he stood there in open mouthed shock.
“Now then, I am going to try to make this very, very clear to you one more time.” Mio said, taking a deep cleansing breath before continuing “I in no way, shape, or form want to be a rival to you or have anything to do with the former rivalry between our families. Now please, PLEASE stop bothering me about that… oh and samurai? Please attack and finish this.” before Koji could protest all three samurai leapt forward and slashed him sending him flying.

Mio blinked as he sat up in bed, his Darumaka and Darmanitan plushies flanking him. Looking around the unlit dorm room he could make out the sleeping forms of his roommates Addy and Gabriel (not to mention Addy’s snoring. Yawning a bit he snuggled back under his covers. Next time Addy got some casteliacones or whatever that ice cream was called he had to hold off on that third helping… it gave him weiiiiiiiiiird dreams…

The End.
