Survival Cooking: Spam, Beans, and Rice
(Zombie Apocalypse? No electric power in your house? Camping in the woods? All of the above? Try this super easy recipe using only Non-Perishables!)
**Super Easy Difficulty**Optional Alcoholic Ingredient**
Serves 4 to 6
3 (15 oz) cans of Black Beans
2 (12 oz) cans of Spam, sliced in medium sized cubes
1 Tbsp Tomato Paste (from a can)
1 Tbsp Red Wine
½ Tbsp Dried Basil
1 tsp Sugar
½ Tbsp Garlic Powder
(optional) Chilli Flakes
Dried Parsley for Garnish
Enough Rice for 4 to 6 people
1) Prepare enough rice anyway you like to feed your survival group. ½ to 1 cup of raw rice per person is the average. Once Rice is cooked set aside.
2) Set a large pot on high heat, and then add in cubed Spam Dried Basil, and Garlic Powder. Mix to coat Spam in seasonings. You will NOT need any oil what-so-ever, because the Spam will release a lot of oil. Leave Spam cooking undisturbed for about 3 to 4 min to char on one side. Then flip the Spam and leave for another 3 to 4 min. Repeat again until the Spam is charred on most sides. You are looking for a deep dark color. It should almost look burnt. This will give the dish a nice smokey flavor, and it gives the spam a great crisp texture.
3) Check around your area for any Zombies that might have heard you start cooking.
4) Add in Sugar and Tomato Paste. Stir to coat Spam cubes and cook for 2 min. This gives the canned meat a beautiful red color that mimics the color of regular meat (not that accurately, but it helps). It also adds in some sugar to caramelize around the meat, and to balance out the saltiness of the Spam. Deglaze by adding Red Wine, and stirring; scraping the bottom of the pot for any charred pieces of Spam and Tomato paste. You can also add a Tbsp of Water if you find the pot is not deglazed enough.
5) Add in all 3 cans of Black Beans. Cook for approx 5 minutes or until heated all the way through; stirring occasionally. Sprinkle in Chilli flakes if you like spicy foods to add another layer of flavor that compliments the earthy beans, the salty Spam, and slightly sweet Tomato Paste.
6) Check your area one more time for Zombies. You never know. If you discover a Zombie present, abandon the meal and run, or carefully cover the dish with a lid as you fight the Zombie so this way no splatters of Zombie particles accidentally gets into your food. Zombie meat causes the dish to become bitter, and too salty. Also, it spreads the virus.
7) If safe, or once Zombie is dead, Place Beans over rice, and garnish with some dried parsley. Enjoy a nice meal… while you’re still alive!
Extra Info: This recipe was inspired by the faccc ‘s recent journal entry about non-perishable foods. Possibly used in a Zombie scenario. A fun idea. I don’t believe there will be Zombies, but this is very entertaining.
This dish is great because there is not a single ingredient listed that needs to be refrigerated. Raw Rice, dried Herbs and Spices, Sugar, Wine, and Canned Foods all last for years in storage as long as they remain dry and out of the sun. Great for camping, during an extended power outage, late at night when you don’t want to fus over what to make for dinner, and/or for zombie apocalypses.
I wrote the recipe based completely on a high heat setting because I wanted it to be usable on a camp fire as well as on a stove. Sticking with the scenario of no power, we have to imagine the Stove doesn’t work either. Even gas stoves are unreliable during a Zombie Apocalypse. Gas lines might be cut or sucked dry. Parts of the oven might be rusted over. Etc. Best to make a camp fire in a safe area.
Stay alive, and Happy Eating! …And if you become a Zombie, well, uh… Happy Eating!
