GENERATION 1
The Generation 1 characters were created a long time ago when I developed a big group of characters with the focus of writing stories. These stories never saw the light, and most of the characters were scrapped, but a few stuck around, or were retooled over the years to fit what I wanted. Stripes isn’t technically from Generation 1, but I had to put him somewhere, and this made the most sense.
Stripes
Despite being my fursona, Stripes is a character like another. He has several different forms, who sometimes have their own storyline and circle of characters, and sometimes not. I'm planning on getting a picture reuniting them all.
It’s always been clear that “Stripes” isn’t the character’s real name. The closest he ever had to an official real name was “Callaster Bechanor”, which I scrapped because it sounds way too pretentious.
Lonay “Lou” Revvon (deer)
Lou is the first character I ever created, apart from Stripes. He’s also the character whose design changed the least since its first creation. He always was a dancer/choregrapher and involved in a cheating storyline. Initially, instead of being the cheater, he was the one being cheated on.
Lou is one of my characters who have two forms. “Normal” Lou is the athletic dancer, very kind, talented and charismatic, but who sometimes gets a little too emotional about his work and his relationships. "Twink" Lou also has leadership and charisma qualities, but is more of a high-maintenance, snobby high-society acting boy.
Floyd Kraatz (fox)
Another one of my early characters whose initial design didn’t change much. Initially a multimedia student, he turned into an ex-dancer cameraman/technician for the TM Studio. His kind, helpful and gentle nature didn’t change. Floyd and Lou used to be an item in the current storyline, despite not being part of the same storyline when I initially created them. His last name, “Kraatz”, was taken from famous Canadian ice dancer Victor Kraatz.
Qorr Loren Fraterly (wolf)
This is a character that has nothing to do with his initial design. Initially, Qorr was a shady new age shop owner who had a knack for hallucinatory drugs. Now, he’s a 30-something army sergeant, stern, quiet and competent. He’s a father figure character, and has a deep protective instinct over those he cares about. I always liked the sharp sound of his name, with lots of “R”s.
Salem Anchorston (cheetah)
Another character that has been totally revamped from his first draft. Initially Salem was a bad boy, whose storyline I can’t even recall. He’s now a wide-eyed, sweet twink type character, little catholic boy out of his native village and into the big city. He’s also the only character in his list who had his last name changed. A lot of the characters from Generation 1 had apocalyptically bad names, and Salem had one of the worst. I think it was “Xergzaros”. Seriously, what the fuck was I thinking.

The generation 1 names are a bit more out there than the others. When I first came up with them, I was still kinda dumb regarding what makes characters interesting. I still am, but at least I learned that complex, weird names are usually just obnoxious.
I think the best way is to pick the existing names that you like, instead of making up an awkward, unrelatable one. ;)

Eh, my first character's name was Karserus, but he is long gone and not really me anymore (was an original representation of me, but no longer) and he had this long name I can't remember. Still, the name Karserus is unique so I use it for a lot of my account names and stuff, but I prefer going by Khimera or Khi since that's who I 'really' am.
I think you're right on the naming bit. It's nice to create a made-up name now and then, but it requires some thought.
