Huh, the gills are on the chest instead of the neck. This is honestly the first time I've seen such a respiratory configuration, or at least noticed it. I'm assuming then that he doesn't have a set of conventional lungs and would asphyxiate on dry land?
Or does he have some sort of hybrid amphibious system that can still function above water as long as there's enough moisture in the air and/or inside his body to keep him hydrated?
I think the Piscciss Volann (Ripjaws) species from the Ben 10 universe also had a hybrid system like that, but I think their gills are located on their necks rather than their chests, but you check for yourself here for Ben's transformation and here for the species in general.
