It's killing me so badly that I can't code games. Maybe a very simple pixel game, but not the full blown 3D world that I have in my mind. I'm half inclined to take a game design class just to create this world that will cease to exist in any place but my mind or on paper if I did not.. For a while, I'll create some designs and release them over time. Maybe someone will pick up the idea and create the game for me.
This is what I feel should be the protagonist to this game. I believe he will be a Great Dane. No idea what his name may be, maybe he's an unknown traveler. Maybe he goes by a title, and he only tells his name to to a VERY trustworthy person in dire situations. Just typing this has ideas brewing in my mind. A big gameplay mechanic I would like is switching from protagonist to antagonist. You learn to love and understand the perspectives of both good and bad. I would have the fantasy realm with white grass, red water, black barked trees with silver leaves, and many mountains. Of course, that can't be the only setting for the world. It would just be the theme for the main overworld. I would want complex battle mechanics., similar to Okami maybe. This would be a very large open world, you wouldn't run into a border unless you went out of your way to find them.
The art style would be a sort of Okami and LoZ: Wind Waker hybrid. Those games are magnificent, and have a unique art style, so I take a large amount of inspiration from them. I want every dungeon, planet, cave, mountain and valley to be bright and colorful. The only instance where these worlds would appear drab or dark is in the eyes of the antagonist. There would be two copies of the same world with a different look just to see how it looks in another's eyes. This would further the Gruntilda Effect [Coined by JonTron!] of feeling in touch with both good guy and bad guy.
Spoilers, just in case this ever becomes a thing..
Keep in mind, this would just be a prototype storyline. I'm brainstorming right now, and I want to get this idea down before I forget it, or before my imagination fails me. First, you would start as the main protagonist, this guy here, and be presented with the dream world slowly taking over the real world because of the main antagonist. You first see him in your dreams, and each time you come in contact with this antagonist, he looks more and more real. He starts as a gaseous creature and becomes a full blown demon ready to take over the worlds with his nightmare army. During segments where you play as the antagonist, you learn why he is trying to overrun the world with nightmares. The biggest, baddest boss would not be the main antagonist, and more of a background enemy. Think of it like Bayonetta. During the whole game, they reference the biggest, baddest, strongest enemy in the game, but you never know anything anything about them other than that. You find the main antagonist to be hardly a threat when going against the big guy. The quests and challenges along the way to the end of the game are as of yet, undecided. Mostly combat and story moving quests, in short. In the end, the bad guy will win, but the player won't mind because the whole game was spent making you love and feel good for both characters. I would want the main characters death to make you upset and choked up, but then you realize you're still happy for the person who won, because they both would have wanted it for a good reason. During this death scene, you would see the character whisper his name to the antagonist/background big bad antagonist, but you would never hear it. To find the name for yourself, you would need to piece together very small clues spread over the whole game. A possible sequel could be maybe you'd play as a deceased version of the protagonist, and you attempt to protect your friends from the last game from being destroyed, so you fight for them in the afterlife of as part of the dream realm. They could never see you as anything but another shadow nightmare creature, as you look just like them. You became another grunt for the nightmare leaders, and the only difference from you to the other shadow creatures is the two crow feathers you had had in your left ear when you were alive. The person who does recognize you [possibly a love interest] refused to accept you had died, and tells you to leave him/her alone. Drama, drama, etc. Maybe the main villain would be yourself. You'd need to realize there was nothing left for you. maybe your friends had perished, despite all your efforts to save them, because of their own inability to recognize you [inner selfishness or something]. They joined him in the nightmare realm, and decided enough was enough, and did some sort of ritual that cleansed their spirits and put them to rest. Most of the stuff would be similar to the first game.
Edit: Maybe the 'big bad' background antagonist would actually be refereed to as the person playing the game, so the whole time the player was actually the enemy everyone was talking about. I would also want the game to have a huge replay factor and was still fun to play after the main storyline was beaten.
The spoilers are over!
So tell me, what do you think? Are there people who i could team up with to make this happen? It's honestly making me a little down that this probably won't ever be a thing, but I can dream.
I may add to this if I think of more. Honestly, I'm not the biggest genius, so I would need a small team to help me make this game. i'm better with the design choices, I need someone else to help with level design and making sure it has vision, and a nice feel. I need someone to help with music. I need someone for plot ideas. Everyone has their own thought processes, and mine are all centered around art design. This isn't something i could do on my own.
