Oh my, this one took me forever!
I've found these three gorgeous candle holders in a shop and I just had to make something out of it. The idea of a ferret entangled in a chain f lights was stuck in my mind and had to get out. ^^ The chain of lights is made of translucent polymer clay and I'm very proud of it. My husband helped me with a wire skeleton for the pretty huge (for a miniature model) christmas tree :3
I used a slightly similar modelling technique as I use when working with Super Sculpey. It is a bit different though, because FIMO (the kind of polymer clay I use more often) doesn't have such a good smudge factor like Super Sculpey and it's more brittle while it's less dimensionally stable. So it makes it way harder to smudge the transitions of the different clay parts and to give the clay a furry texture.
But I like the fact that FIMO comes in different colours and doesn't have to be painted, yet sealed with varnish. I think this gives this little sculptures kind of their own congeniality and it supports a toony and cute character best.

Thank you!
For this candle holder and so far for each candle holder I've made I used FIMO polymer clay. It is not necessary to seal it unless it was painted with acrylics or if you want to achieve a glossy look :3
For highly detailed sculptures I actually use "Super Sculpey". Here in Germany there are only few colours of "Super Sculpey" available as far as I know.

Interesting. I never thought to paint Sculpey, I always used colored Sculpey as a skin, running it through a pasta machine to make it a nice even sort of thin for the skin, since making a solid bit of colored Sculpey wouldn't be economical or sensible on a bigger project. Sufficed to say, that was all the pasta machine was ever used for (we got tired of hand rolling so we finally gave up and got the pasta machine).
The colored Sculpey is the same way, no need for sealing unless you want it shiny. In the states, we can get Sculpey in lots of colors and blend up others if they don't make it. If you get another project where you would prefer to use Sculpey but can not get the colors, I would be more than happy to ship you the colors you need, if it would be helpful.
