.rtf is Rich Text Format, which is basically the least complicated kind of "word document". It can have formatting like italics, bold or underline, and can tolerate things like ' ? or " better than the kind of .txt used in upload on FA.
When saving a file on any word-type program (anything more advanced than a text file editor) it should let you choose the format? (as in, text file .txt, word document .doc...). Look for the one which is "Rich Text Format .rtf" or something similar.
