Ben is an agressive, fairly bad tempered guy- or he was until he met Abby. She's his mate, and even as a human he couldn't resist her. He was reluctant to join the pack at first, thinking that becoming part of it would make him a puppet on Max's strings. But a little convincing from Will, and mention of the fact that Max wouldn't let him anywhere near Abby if he didn't join broke his worries. He loves Abby more than life itself, and over the few years that he's known them, has grown fond of Max and Will as well, noting Max as a fair Alpha- unlike the one he ran away from. When he's around Abby, he's a much softer guy, taking care not to upset by getting angry too easily, or getting violent. When she's not around, he'll pummel anyone just for looking at him wrong, much like Max does.
