Well, to be fair, Book of Sorrows plumbed depths that even Stephen King books refused to tread. It's the closest thing to literary masochism I have ever found, and I've found some pretty dark stuff in my day.
Wangerin said he was inspired by various biblical stories when he wrote it. To that, I say: AND HOW.

Knowing it was written by a pastor, makes the story even more disturbing. Dude has some issues. I also felt like it was a bit of a big F-you to fans of the previous book, where he took these beloved characters and had the most disgusting things happen to them he could imagine. The only other book I've read that was in the same league of grossness and utter dispair was The painted Bird.
Well, when you're essentially dealing with the very pagan Jörmungandr (he may have been a pastor, but he was quite happy to appropriate pagan symbols into his story) combined with the Celtic Winter mythology, you can get away with REALLY dark stuff. But few authors hate their characters so much as to write a book that's nothing but one long Diabolicus Ex Machina.
The Bird with No Tongue was an especially vile example, though - and man, I hate to defend Wangern - it's the sort of the thing the Midgard Serpent would have done, too, simply because he had a whole bunch of Loki in him.
