I did the art last year, for the first annual award of the "Faned" -- yet another mostly pointless attempt to rig an award system so that the "right" people win it. The first year's "Faned" was fairly successful insofar as the winners were chosen by the same guy who invented the award. Still, he had impeccable taste in artists -- he paid me handsomely for the art. This year was no different from 2011 -- once again the winners have been announced by fiat. And, once again, I've done all the graphics, lettering each award certificate with the name of the winner and the excuse for choosing him. This is a sample of the basic lettering -- no name has been added yet. Next year, there may be nominations and an actual vote.
However, I had a cute idea of my own for the certificates. Each year's will be subtly different from all other years. If you compare the image carefully with the original one found at -- http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6695593/ -- you might discover the difference.

Nice, even if chosen by fiat they are still chosen. It is good that artists who have been ignored for 'the new kind on the block' are being requnized. Anna and I intend to attend Worldcon in '13 as it will be held downtown, if your on the list again we will vote for you.
Myself, I stopped entering competing when I won an FAI award, for a non-artist after that what is there?

Which award is the FAI?
The big problem with the Canadian fanzine awards is that fanzine fandom in Canada is nearly extinct. What little is left includes two clubzines, two guys in Vancouver, another in Calgary and me. That's just about it. There are plenty of artists who display at conventions, but none that routinely appear in Canadian fanzines -- just me. The guy named this year is rotten -- but Graeme, who created the award, said he had little choice. At least the artist is still drawing, and not a page torn out of ancient history, and might get better someday. The situation is a little better when it comes to fan writers ... but not much. As for letter hacks, there's only a guy named Lloyd and myself. Last year I was named best Fan Artist, this year I was Best Fan Writer, and maybe next year I'll win Best Fanzine. But winning bars you from the category. Pretty soon I should work my way through all of them. So will the other handful of active fanzine fans in this country. Graeme hopes that by then his awards will have encouraged more people to become involved in the hobby, but I have serious doubts. Do people film movies just to win an Oscar?

At that point money and prizes are the same. I distinguish between awards and prizes, though, in that a prize involves money but an award only involves recognition (no money). Of course, there are some prizes and awards that do come with money, but few amount to any significant amount.
It was the Galileo, ST:TOS shuttle that's gone and a Sand Crawler in its place. I already had one Trek reference and didn't want a second, but had trouble thinking of a replacement when I originally did the artwork. I thought up the Sand Crawler later, and have actually changed the pencil drawing. To change the file, though, I only scanned the little bit I altered and patched it into the previous scan.
