The Obelisk of Light was the heavy defensive turret for the Brotherhood of NOD in the original Command & Conquer game (and all following Tiberium story-line games).
Basically, it's a fully automatic tower that shoots a beam of highly concentrated light at enemy units, blasting them to smithereens.
It started as just a slightly curved tower, but over the decade that the game series is based, it evolved into a more scorpion-shaped structure (as the scorpion tail is NOD's symbol)
