I think six is a good enough number for my little alien clan, for my own characters, anyway. I'd likely include friend ones.

Skold and Leer are on equal grounds and often will brawl for hours. Though leer often keeps to himself, leaving Skold to be the leader.
Cardinal and Cerulean are the kids of the clan.. even if they're not exactly kids anymore. They're usually found irritating the carnivores plants of the planet.
Fossil is the big old grandaddy. He despises anything that interrupts his quiet time.
And finally Helio, the only fully matured female of the clan. Unlike most adult females, she hasn't left the clan, she's the mother of Cerulean and probably the reason why.
