A dragon dance through Chinatown, celebrating the Chinese New Year.
Acrylic paints on 20"x30"illustration board - the original painting will be at the Further Confusion 2008 art show.
This painting took approximately 120 hours to complete.
All of the characters depicted are my own original characters - several of them are recurring characters thoughout my artwork - including Cirrus the eastern blue dragoness, Candi the red panda, Antarctica the blue vixen, Echo the genet, Vienna the arctic roo, Kristania(Misty)the ringtail cat, and Ace the black jackal.
This is a fictional Chinatown - the building designs are my own creation - the gateway was inspired by the Chinatown gateway in London, however, and the entire piece was inspired by visiting San Francisco's Chinatown.

I adore this piece in every possible respect.

The arch is eerily similar, just not as big :P
You're really perfect! The eexpressions, the buildings, every furry, everything is so realistic and wonderful painted <3
Wow! Incredible!!! One of a kind!!
PROUD of you, even if I don;t know you from the AFLAC Duck. (*Smile*)
Very impressive.
The care you take is plain for anyone to see.
Most excellent job!
GAH!! *asplodes*
I am planning on offering large format prints of the piece - but I'm not sure of what sizes...
Don't know how I'll pay for it, but I'll manage somehow.
If I can have a preference, I'd like one the same size as the original.

=) Thanks for your interest
And thank you very much =D
I wish I dared bid on this piece, but I'd so be left in the dust...
My brain crashed trying to process all that detail. :o
The level of detail in this is astounding, and all of the hours you put in would have driven me crazy, so I applaud you and your patience!
And I find a dragon watching a dragondance amusing. :D
...Grand.
I like seeing how other artists work, as well... so I enjoy seeing WIPs
You know, that shadow is one of my favorite parts, as well. It wasn't one of the things that was planned in my mind - it was just something I decided to do when I was painting that section, and I was happily surprised with how well it turned out.
As far as reference material goes, I collected many images of chinatowns, and of dragon and lion dances - and I used those images for inspiration, but I didn't use any direct reference while I drew or painted the piece. I wanted it to have more of an air of fantasy about it, rather than try to make it look photorealistic... So it is all from my imagination, but inspired by looking at some images and getting ideas before I got started =)
You blow me away every time you post artwork, I fave one because its a favorite, but then imediately the next one I want to fave to. I might as well just +fav your entire freakin' gallery!
Anyway, thank you for sharing every piece of this beautiful work of art, seeing and comparing the original sketch WIP's to the final product just makes it feel so much more amazing!
It came out absolutely beautiful, I am so impressed!
Especially, thank you for posting your progress as you did this. I don't think I often times think about the kind of or amount of work that goes into a piece like this and it was good to be reminded.
My god this is the kind of stuff that makes me just feel all pathetic as a mere photographer. I have images that beautiful and detailed in my head that I just can't get my hand to create...
This is favorited and definitely in the list for all time favorites :)
breathtaking . . . . thats all i can sumise here O.O
I really can't wait to see it in person at FC--there's so many little things going on! :]
*favs twice*
So let's just say you rock all around, another masterpiece!!
Oh lordy, this is fabulous. Thank you so much for posting the WIPs. This is such an inspiring piece of work -- even though I just got off work, I want to leap to my drawing table and get to cracking something out.
Thank you so much for sharing such a beautiful piece of art with us. I am really looking forward to seeing it this FC.
And I'm glad you use those Chinese words, I will tell all Chinese furries to watch this great art! ^^
(The black cat on the roof is so cute! ^^)
My fave character is the dubious/curious feline in the lower right. Very beliveable expression!

I don't see anyone else I recognize but it is truly an amazing piece of art.
NOW ANIMATE IT FRAME BY FRAME OR YOU DIE MUWHAHAHAHA
I must get you a picture of the gate to Chinatown in Los Angeles
Ah, here you go: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://pdphoto.org/jons/pictures4/memorial_14_bg_053004.jpg&imgrefurl=http://pdphoto.org/PictureDetail.php%3Fpg%3D8156&h=768&w=1024&sz=139&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=_Tw31l-YJkKyMM:&tbnh=113&tbnw=150&prev=/images%3Fq%3DChinatown%2BLos%2BAngeles%26gbv%3D2%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26sa%3DG
I would like to continue doing this kind of work in the fandom, definitely. Also though, I've decided that I enjoy painting scenery so much, that I want to be a landscape/cityscape painter for galleries.
A picture to inspire not just a single thought or feeling, but a whole story.
Mmmmm.... Good stuff.
The largest prints my printer is capable of making is 13"x19", and the original is 20"x30" so I would need to find a competent 3rd party printing service.
But when I sell the original, I'd like a poster print for myself, totally.
This would look so awesome in large up on the wall of my bedroom haha
:D thankies for the super fast reply as well! *hugs*
Congratulations, my friend, you've done it again <happy grin>! This is a true masterpiece that commands attention with all its detail, balance of color, and the expressions on even the most minor of characters. Yes, I too will want a print when you get around to making them.
Mythril
looks like you bring a new whole furry chinatown to live!
The colors and detail are a pleasure to behold.
Amazing, really it is.
I went to San Fran.'s Chinatown at least 3 times while I was visiting. Loved it!
Also, what's with the Corgy?
-grey
And I've frequently been fascinated by the concept of anthros having quads as pets.
yesh, i love corgi's and when i grow up, i WILL have one.
*adorable!*
-grey
HAD to be faved. :D
I am amazed at all the different details. I can tell that each one was done with skill and patience. You deserve as much praise as possible for this!
(and the inclusion of an anime shop makes me want to go there!)
OMG there's a sniper on the roof, everyone duck!!!
I love dragons - and I love Chinese culture - so I felt like mixing the two in a cultural way, and including anthros (of many species) would make for a fun piece.
But also I've been using them exclusively for a year or so now, so a lot of practice definitely helps. Regular tubed acrylics were what I used before I discovered fluid acrylics - and I mixed them with water and acrylic glazing liquid as a retardant.
finally I'm at the reply board...
*catches breath*
This is stupendous, an absolute marvel of a true genious!
Your skill outranks numerous people on here, and the only real rivals I would say you have here are DarkNatasha and Frogsbreath, and probably a few people on DeviantArt.
Do you have any tips for someone who doesn't draw backgrounds well?
I can do furs and people okay, but it's the backgrounds I have trouble with X_X
+fav! =^_^=
+Watch :P
awesome by the way.
Actually I did a drawing along those lines - reversing animal and human roles, that is - in which a lion and a cheetah are lounging about in a hunting lodge ... with human trophy heads over the fireplace, and a fierce looking human taxidermy in the corner... I thought it was pretty funny. One of the human heads turned out looking a lot like Harry Potter - and another looked like Shaggy from Scooby Doo - but those were accidental ^.^,,
Great job!
keep up the great work
Excellent work on coloring and shading, and most of all the atmosphere of the picture. ^_^
Nice job!!
Just got reminded of this image and I got curious as to what the fate of it was
Part of me just wants to say... don't sell it. This thing is, in my opinion, your finest, most complicated work. Your masterpiece, so to speak. The image that you spent so much time on, and turned out so well... If you do sell it, sell a high-quality print, or a print that has some more prominent parts painted back on like I've seen other professional artists do.
I'm very happy to have it on my wall. But someday if the right buyer comes along, someone I know who would take good care of it and enjoy it as much as I do, I'd be happy to sell it as well. Thats what it was created for...
Would be nice to see more of Cirrus the dragoness too :)
is so amazing
because ,I 'm chinese
I have been astonished....
The detail on every individual character really is astounding. :)
