I think so. I haven't played with Photoshop enough to know what I'm doing, but I've actually figured out transparency on my own. Something that you might want to consider doing is reading te book that came with the program or use the index that's within the program to learn how to use Transparency.

As for the BG in PS, open this pic in PS, make a transparent layer beneath it then use the "wand" tool and select all the white that you don't want and delete it...that should work. I'll have to check with my Tuts on my other comp. that has decided to act up!
