Hollywood does tend to severely overstate how dangerous the hard vacuum of space is to the human body. And Dr. Akai is engineered to have a tougher body than the average human. He might feel a slight headache but no head explody. And he has an organ that scrubs the oxygen in his blood for a few hours so he doesn't have to breathe during that time. Weird alien physiology, yes.
