How I matched them was kind of sad. Most of the background shading is a layer over another white layer. I dimmed it down by coloring that white layer purple. To start anyway. Purple to match the sky hue at the very top. Everything looked good until I added green turtles. x.x Fussed and fussed and finally realized what was needed.. the purple in the back had to be green. I can't make green turtles purple, but I could make the back match them. That's how I got it to kind of work. :P The sky was de saturated to a sliver of color, and the buildings are now green.
I've been wondering that for years. ;) There was so much going on in the drawing I purposely left certain things plain, or just didn't care about details. Like there's a 'big space' between turtles and Foot. Could have filled it with Foot, but the drawing was already spammy. Just one of those things. Made a good spot for my signature. :)
