Sure, i may be against pregnancy in today's world rife with overpopulation - but that doesn't mean it's not beautiful.
Equustra, pregnant. Not full-term, obviously (at least i think that's obvious... >.>) but starting to show.
Anyhow,
shinigamigirl said recently that sketches show an artist's abilities better than finished pieces, because the barebones of the picture aren't covered up. (or something along those lines, that's not a verbatim quote) and you know what? I really do like to look at a good sketch. It's kinda sad that sketches often get overlooked because they're not fancy, clean, or coloured. And i think this one's coming out really well, so i decided i'd upload it in its sketchy state.
It's a lot cleaner than mine usually are... especially lately - i realized the lead i'd been using was a lot softer, and that's why my recent (unseen) sketch work has been so damn messy. I thought i was just losing my grip on art, or something. But here i used one of my other pencils equipped with harder lead, and it's nice and clean. Quite a relief...
So, for any others out there who enjoy sketches despite their lack of bling and razzle-dazzle, here you go, enjoy. :)

thats something i always thought, sketches do look the best really, thats why i like to work ( whenever i USED to ) in B/W. . . if i ever get back into this itll be the same too . . b/w images are soo unique, specially under shading . . .
I know what you mean, im stuck with assloads of soft lead pencils, mechanical and standard . . . and my works always come out fuzzy, smudy, and almost "runny". im looking into smudge free . . . only problem is they dont erase too well . . . and thats something i do alot . . . ( not always good at getting the line down the way i want to ) which is why i havent drawn too much lately . . . tho imtrying to find the right tablet ( IE Wacom ) . . .if i can find a tblet that you can turn the tap feature off anywho, i may start back up skecthing digitally. which the bamboo fun does a great job, not terribly accurate, and would be close to perfect if you could turn off the tap feature . . . once i find one that can ill be in business. oh and yes, very nice work, the shading detail . . and well the DETAIL . . lol, wonderful n.n

Even when i use soft lead, i find that being careful in combination with using a blank sheet of paper to cover the right side of the page where my hand rests cuts the smudging down to almost nothing.
As for erasing, i erase a LOT. i know it doesn't show up on my pics here (thankfully ;p) but if you looked closely at my originals, you'd be able to see all the erased lines on a lot of them.
Your name always reminds me of the word 'gravid' ...i'm mentioning this now only because of the theme of this picture. ;p

I really like it, although to me, it looks like far more advanced than anything I would call a sketch. Anyhow, I agree with you that sketches tell a lot about an artist, I have found myself sometimes liking a sketch very much and finding the inked version barely acceptable, on my own stuff that is.
On the other hand, I LOVE pregnancy art ;).

Instafave...omg...Major this is so adorable and cute/hot 8D I agree with you and Shinny on the subject of sketches. It's actually one of the reasons I prefer the old rough style of animation rather than all this new smoothed and polished stuff. It's lively and shows us thinking as draftsman and artists. here you are showing your understanding of hooves and legs in perspective, and anatomy. This is a great study man...really beautiful stuff...

That's just awesome!
I've been posting mainly sketches for a while now, and I'd have to say I agree with Shinny and yourself. They show more of an artist's method and style. Kind of like the arcitecture of the pic, before the paint and wallpapaper go up.
But what's really nice is seeing Equustra so happy - "glowing" as the term is. A contented, expectant mom.

I think this is nice!
I don't think it varies that much, actually, I think the best someone can do is the best someone can do, it has nothing to do with a sketch, a sketch shows how they do it, a complete piece shows how good they are. However, if you mean a quick sketch, that might be different. *shrug*
Either way, I love how clean your sketches are. :3

You mean people actually pay attention to what I blurt out on LJ sometimes? ;P
Marvelous drawing, really lovely attention to anatomy on the legs. Although as a sidenote, I noticed that her left leg is placed at an almost impossible angle where the hoof is concerned. You should be able to see the back or side view, but certainly not a frontal view of it as the knee and hock can't bend so much towards the inside if the other side of the hip is jutting forward, try it with your foot in that position.
(Sorry if this was a bit forward of me, I don't know what your views on critiques are and I know you were not asking for one) <3

Don't worry about it :D If i couldn't take criticism (and constructive no less!) i wouldn't be here. Yeah, it does look a little strange - the funny thing is, i actually used a photo of some girl as a reference when i sketched out the general pose at the beginning, which i've like... never done. And her legs were like this :P But yeah, i might have gone a bit too far in making the front of that cannon and hoof visible. Hey, the good thing is, it's just a sketch, so i can still change it without destroying it! :D
Wow. Such a dynamic and visually interesting pose. Your anatomy work is astounding, you know that? re: your ref pic Was the girl supporting her weight on that hind leg and leaning on something or was it taken while rolling over (or some such) on a horizontal surface (the top of a bed perhaps) If twisted that far when supporting weight I would imagine it would be uncomfortable, but I have knee issues myself and may just be sensitive :P It is a testament to your wonderful detail work that people can even have a discussion about specific placement of cannon and hoof *grin*
And thank you for sharing your sketch work. As a well built foundation is a thing of beauty even before the house is added, so it is nice to see some of the progression. I'm trying to learn more about drawing, though I'm doing more writing at the moment, and I appreciate your sharing. Thanks again.
