A certain part of the depth is an illusion. Even if you just grab the Smith-Waite deck and redraw it in your own style, it looks 'deep' because it's chock full of symbols. These cards are designed to be symbolically rich, and that's a lot of their attraction.
OTOH, some of the depth is really there. I'm looking at a fair amount of commentary for each of these and trying to generate new imagery, as a rule. I bring in my own set of oblique, eclectic references from my own experience.
On the third hand, what's more shallow than 'I drew a friend as the Queen of Swords'? It's all in how you look at it.

Hm. According to Golden Dawn's Book T the 3S is
Disruption, interruption, separation, quarrelling; sowing of discord and strife, mischief-making, sorrow and tears; yet mirth in Platonic pleasures; singing, faithfulness in promises, honesty in money transactions, selfish and dissipated, yet sometimes generous: deceitful in words and repetitions; the whole according to dignity.
("The whole according to dignity" means, I think 'depending on if it's upright or inverted'.)
And That Asshole Crowley says something about "the womb of Chaos. There is an intense lurking passion to create, but its children are monsters. ... Secrecy is here, and Perversion."
Meanwhile, Book T says the QS represents someone who is
Intensely perceptive, keen observation, subtle, quick and confident: often persevering, accurate in superficial things, graceful, fond of dancing and balancing.
If ill dignified, cruel, sly, deceitful, unreliable, though with a good exterior.
- and TAC says pretty much exactly the same thing, except with about 25% more words and naked boobies. Not surprising given that his version is based on the GD version.
(Book T is in a file on my desktop, Crowley's Book of Thoth is in arm's reach, so that's all you get. Draw your own conclusions as to who and what the 3S/QS recurring combination means to you.)
