He looks like what Mario would be like if he came from the wrong side of Brooklyn. Or italy. Nintendo makes his origin so confusing nowadays. >_<

I think of Mario's origin as the Mushroom Kingdom. In most of his RPG's he's got a home there.

I think the whole brooklyn/new york thing might be vestiges of the 80's needing something that tethers fantasy to RL.

Yeah, but the whole story behind Mario getting to the Mushroom Kingdom had to do with him cleaning pipes, even in the instruction booklet for Super Mario Bros. 1. And hey, if you're stuck someplace that needs you to save it all the time, and you can't figure out an easy way to get home, wouldn't you make a house there?
