Fox In The Electronics Lab

When he's not in the chemistry lab, Andy Fox can often be found playing in his business's electronics lab. Here we see him measuring some clock frequencies. Note the inspirational wall art. Also, badgers are an essential part of all electronics labs.

I donno. It's an Elenco XK-525 bought back around 1991. Are you that old, or just your school's equipment?

Potentially a little of both. Actually at the time what PCs they had were IBM XTs tricked out with both 3.5 and 5.25 floppy drives

No modems at the time I didnt have one for a couple more years that and luggage PCs with green screens

Commodore 64s were much more portable.

Indeed but luggables were the laptops of the day keyboard covered the like 5inch screen. Dual floppies really high tech

nice... though quite a lot of discrete components. I'm not good with analog electronics. I'd hope for some ways to do it with an AVR... as that's what I usually use (and basically all I'm able to :)

Many of the spectrum analyzer kits out there these days are AVR-based. Less components, but they're all based on DSP and I feel the analog approach is more.... authentic. I'd rather have a 8-channel analog-based display than a 100-channel DSP-based display.

I'm more pragmatic - I'd rather have something my skill level actually is sufficient to build than a nicer, authentic, truer version which would need understanding of those black magic of ANALOG which I'm lacking :)

Also I don't have any Atmel microcontrollers, or a programmer, nor do I know the language, so......

Not dissing them in any way, of course. I love microcontrollers. Just that there are two ways to approach every idea: do it all in hardware, or do it all in software.

As a first project I'd propose a portal gun or teleporting device, to connect Minnesota and Germany. Should make the following projects easier :)
