A closeup of Twisel the Rat, my Devil's Night makeup creation! Would have debuted at Furfright but I still had some things to prepare (dammit dammit), but given his sleazy nature I could not say how he would have been received, bleh bleh bleh!
Northfur small rat nose prosthetic that I commissioned in 2010. The blending and color work turned out so well I didn't even have to Photoshop it, I am very pleased with how this turned out. And I got to work out his character to boot, so it was a very good time.

Comprehensive album of the photoshoot, enjoy!

The top and side edges were nice. The bottom ones under the muzzle were slightly thicker but rather good. They were the ones that I had to re-glue after several hours of wear, but for that I thought they held up well. The real test will be when re-applying the nose a second and possibly third time, after which I may convert it into a nice half-mask.
That's the other thing about some of these masks, that part that goes around the outside of the mouth. I don't think they should make it with that part. Face flexes so much and pops them off. I learned to not even blend latex down around the mouth or it will stretch and pop loose and dangle. If the prosthetic just went up along the cheeks, I don't think that would make it look bad. But since these are heavier, I don't know, maybe they designed them that way to give them more support on the face.
Oh wait, /under the muzzle/. You are gluing that to your upper lip? I never applied one of these kind to know how that would look otherwise, but on the woochie cat nose I don't glue that down. I just glue it to my cheeks, and nose bridge and let the bottom dangle. I paint up under it black, like my upper lip and up to the nose, and paint the lower edge of the cat nose (the upper lip) black, which makes it harder to tell that the nose isn't attached there, so when my lips moves and the prosthetic lip doesn't, or I tilt my head back, can't tell. It probably helps with range of expression to. And, with the bottom open, I can also wipe my nose and take care of the condensation problem...with some difficulty.
I always glue underneath the upper lip, and that section holds very well unless I am congested and have the nose-drips (God I hate that). That has always done well no matter what Northfur nose I have used, no limits on expression or movement which is great. It's only as you go out to the cheeks around the lower mouth corners that blending/adhesion becomes an issue. At that point you just use a LOT of Pros-Aide adhesive and hope it doesn't pull up too badly.

I SO want to try out their new rat nose. It is very schnozzy and would be perfect for Twisel to get up in people's faces!
I think once they have completed a nose they do not revisit their design unless they perform an overhaul, it would be very difficult to re-cast the molds to finesse edges after the fact. That said, with some care the small rat noses can work very well.

What I have done with other Northfur prosthetics in the past is to slowly trim off the thin bits under the muzzle with subsequent uses. Some are really well designed so that is unnecessary, such as with the rabbit and small rodent/rabbit pieces. Others like the small cat nose need to be trimmed up and consequently/ironically look better on each application. I have one that I was going to use at FF for myself that was trimmed up nicely and would have looked very good underneath. The sides and top would have require more latex to blend them, but that is easier to pull off than near the mouth.
Depending on the edges and my optimism, I often try to work with them as they are. In some cases I can blend them pretty well, in others I just trim them right off. There is a danger of overtrimming and cutting too close to a thicker area, which really can affect blending in that case. So bit by bit one can get to that point.
