Hurricane Sandy caused quite a bit of damage along the shoreline of Old Newcastle. Fortunately the town itself sustained very little damage, but the town's pier along with large portions of the paved trail along the shore need to be completely rebuilt, having sustained severe damage. In many areas erosion has caused the paved trail to collapse. The pier, pictured here, is now floating in segments alongside its pilings.
