Just in time for Halloween, the Project Future side-story 'Turning a New Page' sees the protagonist having to pass judgement on an adventurer accused of murder.

This is the final version, where the gallows have been replaced with a guillotine, see also the gallows version in my gallery.

I was torn between which version to use, but I eventually went with the guillotine for a number of reasons.

Firstly, beheading seems to be the de-facto means of killing people in the DMFA universe (see  missmab's comic for details).

Mink's mother died this way (which inspired me to write this particular part of the story), and a number of other 'Cubi were murdered this way in Lost Lake. Alexsi almost went the same way (eerie how close our stories came together) and 'Cubi can also lop people's heads off with their wing-tentacles. At the end of the day, 'Cubi and other Creatures can probably survive being hanged (given time to prepare), so taking the head off seems to be the best way to be sure.

Secondly, the guillotine as used in France was originally intended to be a more humane means of execution, and while it may not necessarily have turned out that way, it is exactly the sort of ideal that Lord Page would aspire to and it does represent a certain degree of technological progress over the gallows that we originally intended to use.

Truth be told, I was tempted to do a Skyrim-style execution also, but I couldn't get the block to look anywhere near as menacing as the guillotine. (Which, incidentally, is made of metal, since a Creature may not necessarily be contained by one made solely of wood).
