To be perfectly honest with all of you, I haven't been a very happy camper lately. Now, for a lot of songwriters and musicians, being down can really help to get their creative juices flowing. However, it doesn't seem to work that way with me. I haven't really been able to write anything lately, and so, somewhat to my chagrin, I present a cover version for the second month in a row.
Most people (at least in the US) only know Soft Cell from their early '80s smash hit "Tainted Love". To this day, I believe that it's one of the greatest pop songs ever recorded (and one of my favorite tunes to bust out at karaoke-- it makes the place go nuts, guaranteed lol). But "Tainted Love" is far from the extent of Soft Cell's genius.
One of my personal favorites is a song called "Youth", from their 1981 debut "Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret". It's haunted me from the very first time I heard it, and only continues to do so even more as time goes on. I'm approaching my 40's, yet I still look, feel and act very much like someone in their 20's, and so lines in the song like "Youth has gone, though we're still young" strike a chord with me, as does the song's underlying theme of nostalgia.
I can't say I'm 100% satisfied with the mix on this, but again, it's a learning process... and I'm not nearly done learning lol. I'd probably benefit greatly from someone else "producing" my stuff on a regular basis, but that's unlikely to happen, as I tend to get inspired to work on music at strange times, when there's no one else around to lend me a hand. Oh well.

Thanks, Bear! ^_^
Believe me, I'm well aware that I could benefit from some reverb on my voice, but right now I really have no way do that. I don't have an effects unit, and I sure as hell don't have the money to get one (and probably won't for quite some time). I was able to put just a hint of an echo on my voice by recording the vocals through the vocoder mic on my synthesizer, but it really doesn't show through in the final mix. But if I'd done *this* one a cappella, like I did the Radiohead song, you'd be able to tell lol.
I recorded this with a TASCAM Portastudio 488 MKII 8-track. Analog, baby lol.
*hugs*

Whoa, I friggin love that song. I thought I was like one of 5 people in the world that actually knows more than one Soft Cell song, haha. I had actually wanted to do a cover of Entertain Me, but I don't have the sneering, british voice for it. I suggested it to my friend, but he wasn't too into the album, which bummed me out. :P
Nice job on the song. Your mix sounds good, considering that at the moment, you don't have access to any of the things that could make it sound better, unfortunately. I think the only tip I could give is that you might want to experiment with panning a bit. It sounds like everything in this is dead center, which can be alright, but sometimes you can get a fuller sound by spacing things out a bit. Sometimes I'll doubletrack a synth or something, EQ the two tracks slightly differently, and pan one left and one right. But then, I do all of my stuff on a computer, so I don't have to worry about only having 8 tracks and then figuring out how to bounce stuff down when I run out, so I don't know how practical that would be for you. x.x

I LOVE Soft Cell. I have all of their albums and 12" singles/B-sides on CD. I especially love that when they did extended versions of their singles, they'd put in entire sections, complete with lyrics, that weren't in the original versions. I'm very tempted to try my hand at "Loving You, Hating Me" as well.
Thanks! I've always tried to make the most of what limited resources I've had at my disposal, so I'm glad if I'm still accomplishing that. You're right, everything's dead center in this. There are a lot of tricks of 8-track recording that I haven't experimented with yet. That's partly due to me always scrambling to record something new at the very end of the month, and partly to my tendency to settle for "good enough" rather than to really put the effort into making something shine. I'm a half-asser, I admit it lol.
You're not talking about Kurt, are you lol? Or is it a RL friend?

No, hehe. I was talking about
crow_winters. We have a band called the Dinosaurs Remember and a lot of our stuff has a pretty strong 80s new wave influence. Crow isn't british, but he's theatrical, haha

Thanks, Wolfhound! The drum track was done with an old Boss DR-550 MK II drum machine that was handed down to me from a friend. The keys were done with primarily with a MicroKorg synth, except for one track on which I used a Yamaha Portatone PSR-16 (also quite old, as is attested to by the sticker on the box, from a chain of stores that has been out of business for several years). The vocals were done through the synth's vocoder mic, and it was all recorded with a TASCAM Portastudio 488 MKII 8-track recorder. No computer programs were used on this recording.
LOL I should start using that as my tagline, the way Queen used to put "No synthesizers were used on this record" on all of their old albums. XD
