A few days after the draft, Marcus Kubiak decided to fly up to Spokane to meet with their new head coach, and his former coach when he played for the University of West Burlington Blackhawks, Steve Von Schnauzer. Steve had known both Marcus and his father Lawrence for a long time from when worked in the Furry Wrestling Federation. Steve himself was a 2-time FCAA 1st-team All-American guard for the Blackhawks back in the late 90’s, but turned down the FBA to work for his brother in the Furry Wrestling Federation, which Lawrence also wrestled in.

They met at the Hop Inn Coffee House for coffee. Maurice was mainly seeking career advice, so he said to Steve, “I was a serious beast with you and the Majors, but to the FBA, I seem to be a nobody.” Steve then said, “I wish you would’ve stayed with us last year, but I know you wanted to be closer to you family. I think the transfer is what hurt your image to the FBA, I mean sure, you led the Northwest 10 Conference in PPG and blocked shots, and went to another Furry Four with them, but you could’ve seen a 2nd FCAA National Championship to really get their attention, had you stayed with us.”

Marcus took a moment to soak in the coach’s words, “You may be right there, anything you suggest I do?” Steve then thought for a moment, then said, “I would suggest that you keep training while you await any calls. In the meantime, I can’t officially hire you to the Rapids as I’m only paid to coach who I’m given, but I’ll see if I can put in a good word with Nightfire for you as he’s the GM. Best of luck, Marcus.” Marcus then replied, “Thank you Steve, and I will keep training!”
