Yours is going in the right direction though! A lot of fur artists I see use smudge, I don't. I'm not very good at it :(

One thing i'm not sure about is the program i'm using. I use, or well just started useing SketchbookExpress with a tablet. Not sure if thats the norm.

Really depends on what you're most comfortable with. Most artists I've seen use Paint tool Sai or Photoshop though. I use Sai myself.
