Today was a cool overcast fall day very typical of Delaware. I had gone to a local park, a mostly wooded area criss-crossed by narrow roads occasionally. Walking along a gravel road now only used by joggers, cyclists and park maintenance crews I found one of only two crossing points to the other side of the river which cut through the park. The bridge looked a little too modern for the area, an area dotted with the occasional colonial era stone structure, dirt paths and ravines. Passing by a dirty sign featuring a picture of just one of the extensive railways that used to cover the area I headed up a path I had been up many times before. I had been to this building a few times. No signs remain explaining its use so I can only guess at what its purpose might have been. However it is obvious from a large number of pipes, a small dam, a nearby man-made collect pond and the constant sound of flowing water coming from inside that it had something to do with manipulating water. Probably a pumping station of some sort, maybe part of nearby Newark's water supply before their new reservoir was constructed a couple years ago. The place had a very eerie James Bond villain kind of feel, like this was really just an entrance for a much larger subterranean structure.
All outside machinery and metal staircases have been removed, as well as a good deal of piping and duct work, leaving a few gaping holes in the sides allowing views into the dark eerie interior. In the summer wasps can be seen around these holes, their nests built just inside the severed pipes. A few lights remain, most of them not in working condition and others so old-fashioned its unlikely they're in use anymore either. The property actually consists of two buildings, the second being the older looking stone building closest to the river. It looked to have been in use as storage by the park after the plant closed. However a layer of brown dust over the plastic chairs, grill and picnic table showed the building hadn't been entered in a long time. I planned on staying awhile to take pictures, however within fifteen to twenty minutes of getting to the station it started to rain, forcing me to head home, grateful I had brought a plastic bag for my camera.
(I hope you enjoyed me little description. I get these in my head occasionally but never seem to have the energy to write them down. Today was the first time I was able to remember one in full)

Thanks very much for the description, Timid. It added a whole lot to the picture.
And yes, it does look like the disguised entrance to a Bondsian villain’s diabolical underground facility.
Quiet, secluded structures like this seem haunted on an overcast Autumn day. Or at least they seem laden with the ghosts of long-forgotten purpose as they begin the long process of crumbling back into the earth.
Autumn is such a melancholy spooky time of the year.
