Aw but I love your shading! D: But if I may make a suggestion, have you tried painting in gray-scale using dodge and burn, then coloring using filters in photoshop? It's a bit hard to control, and gets tedious but looks great in the end, especially for environments:

That looks so cute...gives almost a sad quality to them, but very beautiful and lifelike. Like how you have that one eye open, and that paw seems to almost be glowing.
