After scanning the finished line art, I put it through a coloring program which lifts the inked art and places it on a separate layer, allowing me to color underneath the lines. I'm keeping, more or less, to the gazelle's natural coloring, though I tweak it a bit, especially where the hair is concerned. (Since gazelle don't normally have hair in the human sense.) Most folks color with a Wacom tablet, but I'm not comfortable doing it that way; there's a disconnect between the eye and hand in that method that I've never been able to overcome. I'd prefer to use a Cintinq, where I can apply the stylus directly to the monitor image, but I haven't won that Lottery yet, so that's not happening anytime soon. So I just use the mouse. (That's almost as bad, really, but a little less disconcerting to me. Maybe because I've had more practice that way.)
The finished product is flat and cartoonish, which is okay if this is as far as you want to take it.

she's coming along nicely, and very curvy. :) I also love the gorgeous hair. :) and no worries about the hands, to me they look long and slender. :)
I use a Fujitsu Lifebook with a wacom surface. I don't know what one would cost you pre-owned, but maybe that's a nice alternative to a cintiq? there yu could paint directly onto the screen. :)
