I've been asked a few days ago to design 
evy-eltrian's sona, formerly a lizard, who wanted to turn into a cat. As it is the first time I do this work for someone else, I wanted to share the process.
Now now, I had to be fixed on which colors I would use, and where I'd put them. So I went on the basis of a dark night blue. Then I chose another lighter blue, so I could put some markings, and introduce more volume to the character when not shadowed. The eyes where asked to be yellow by evy-eltrian. Thus I had my sharp color to use some contrast. As for the fur pattern, I thought that a “chaomancer” such as him could use some mystic/antic look.
