....his name is Takoda and he is one of the sweetest creatures ever.
This past month I visited a wolf sanctuary and this is what I was given (I also gave a LOT of ear/butt/belly scritches in return) This sanctuary specializes in helping neglected wolves and wolf-dog hybrids that have been abandoned by their owners up and down the East Coast.
I decided to share this because it's amazing. <3

They have a remarkable appetite that people don't consider when they take them in. Everybody thinks a wolf or a wolf-dog hybrid is cool to have but wolves themselves have to eat quite a bit and the hybrids are a gamble. Some are very easily manageable but others, aside from the appetite, can also be very territorial and not much different from wolves themselves.
And that's something that people don't grasp not just about hybrids but even certain breeds of domesticated dogs. My mom really wants a border collie, for example, but I keep telling her (not to be mean or anything) that she would most likely be better off not getting one because of the kind of attention they need and how easily they can get bored (and they can get plain evil when they're bored). My best friend has one and while she says he's unbelievably fun and affectionate, he is definitely a handful. But I digress, point is...yeah some folks just don't look into -anything- before making a decision like that.
There are a LOT of reasons; the #1 reason being most people think they are 'cool' and just like raising a dog. Big 'ol NOPE to that one.
My day job is a park ranger; you wouldn't believe how many people just don't fully grasp the concept that wild animals should be wild. Just please love them from afar :D
It's great that there are sanctuaries like this because a lot of shelters have a 'no tolerance' policy for hybrids and just put them down (has happened to a friend a few months ago and I warned him). This sanctuary is great for education purposes as they are very active in spreading the word of wolves and they also have a great adoption system; so many of these wolves are relocated to people that actually know how to care for them.

Well intentioned people buy wolves and find out that even when raised with structure, they still do their own thing.
A wolf was surrendered there because he totalled a wealthy woman's Mercedes- Benz when she left him in the vehicle to go shopping. He literally tore the inside up so bad, it wasn't worth it to repair the vehicle. (The value of the luxury car wasn't enough to fix what he did. It took under an hour.)
Another wolf was surrendered because he almost ripped his owners throat out for some BBQ chicken.
A wolf was surrendered because he literally ate the owner's cat one day.
One wolf was the offspring of two aggressive wolves that had to be shot by police as they (The wolves) guarded a meth lab.
You *can* successfully live with a wolf, or wolves. But your preconceptions must be stripped away (A long, slow, and painful process to be sure!) and replaced with a cold, factual based reality and interface with said creature.
What that means, is you had better be able to look at a wolf and *know* exactly what it's thinking. (It's actually not hard, but it takes years of regular interaction with *pure* wolves to achieve)
The other part of that equation, is that *you* have to be willing to ovverride what *you* want, when your instincts are telling you *not* to do it.
That means, not petting the fluffy wolfy even though you really really want to, when your instincts are saying, "Don't do it! She's irritable right now!" (I have a video os this happening to me, but it was a warning bite. It'd probably violate some sort of RL violence thing if I posted it, though.)
The only thing I'd stress above all else is to *never* ignore your instincts. Ever! Even if it doesn't make any sense.

Certain states have laws pertaining to certain wild animals, but they should only be pets to experienced owners that understand this is in NO way a dog. And if someone were to obtain a creature like this, they should only be rescued, I do not in anyway support breeding of hybrids or captive wolves. And this sanctuary makes that statement very, very clear as well. They are certainly different and require much more attention than any typical Labrador, Corgi, Chihuahua...etc. Dogs we all know and love. That tends to be where most people make the mistake of getting one =/
Oh man.. i wish i could go there. our local sanctuary is for breeding rare wolves and releasing them wild. No human contact, they're raised to fear man and survive. (we have mexican wolves OwO)
<3 but it must be amazing to see and touch and be given kisses and cuddles by those beautiful animals..

yeah there was like 7 or 13 left at ALL, and like one female.. and most the males were her kids.. and then she had pups with the one male who was super old.. and only one survived and was a girl.. but she's super alpha and amazing and has had SO many kids and raised them perfectly and stuff..so the population is growing, and they've been introducing them into the wild pretty successfully..
and they have like tiny mini foxes, the smallest ever, and those are doing good I think.
So I'm like super happy for them. (they recently had a public little talking event thingy, no actual animals, just pelts and info but it was cool)

Humans have a long history with three major species, felines, canines and horses.
I believe the reason why people say dogs are man's best friend is because of things like this. Yes wolves are wild yes, but all dogs are come from the wolf. To be up close to a wolf like you have been is an experience you should never take for granted, this is man kinds first friend. Treasure it always.
