that's the smart way to do it! XP
i did a test with the riveted maille and butted and the butted one was pathetic, anything pointy got through! Also did a small section with vertical rows forge welded and the connecting links riveted and there was pretty much no difference in the strength (just much more work in my opinion)
and just for the record: the "hauberk" i made had no sleeves, and wasn't knee length. I got lazy XD

I believe it, the riveted maille and welded maille tested the same (I couldn't rend apart a single ring) but butted maille was worthless. Most people forget the padded jack underneath. which is bad because its half the armour! XD
the only thing that i could get to penetrate entirely was a bodkin headed war arrow from 20 feet from a 54# longbow

Depends from the period, that's now the 7 century, if you have a look at Sutton Hoo Burial Mound I and XVII, and the Pioneer/Wolllaston find. Helmet, maybe mail, some kind of arm protection (my armguards are inspirated by Valsgärde burial IIX) On the helmet decorations of that period and some stones you see, always longe lines of warrioers wearing an helmet, an wrapowercoat and some ornaments show us maybe mail, because we know that they used mail as armour. What you mean is more around 1000-1066 in this periid the anglo-saxon Huskarls used long suits of mail.
