Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis is my favorite anime ever and might also be my favorite movie of all time. I've got a soft spot for artificial life forms, and Tima's one of my favorite little 'bots ever. Needless to say, being a Gadget fan too, I realized that there's a lot of similarities between the two characters, not just in terms of visual appearance. They're both kind, naive, socially awkward and mechanically-inclined.
I drew this not too long after the movie came out and, until today, I'd completely forgotten about it. I was crusing through some of my old art this morning, saw this sketch and went, 'How the HELL did I never finish this!?' I scanned it in, drew over all the sketchy pencil lines in bright red, then selected and removed everything else and went to work on coloring it.
The background nearly killed me. It's a hell of a lot more complex than it looks, and keep in mind, the program I use was never designed for anything like this. We're talkin' MS-Paint level technology. Still, I freakin' love how it came out in the end.
Hopefully, Gadget-as-Tima will keep away from strange Ziggurats...

Thanks! After I drew the initial background lines at five-pixel width over my original Tima/Gadget lineart, I had to split it up into three parts (because it was too complex to select otherwise), then figure out how to get from 180 to 240 (on my color wheel). I used the fill tool to make everything 180 (the really super light blue), then filled in one of the three sections with 195, cut that section, filled in the white space with 180, pasted the 195 section back on, and moved it up five pixels. I did that five times, each time making the top section darker, cutting it out, filling it in the next lightest color, then pasting the darker section just above it so the colors would look like they were smoothly darkening. I wanted to get a neon effect. I had to do this five times each for each of the three sections, and it crashed a whole buncha times while I was doing it. Finally, I cutted and pasted the original Tima/Gadget lineart from another window where I had it stashed safe onto the newly-created background. After that, all I had to do was go in and draw all the shadows and change the line colors on the figure. Whew!!
If you actually read all that, you deserve a cookie.

Fie on you! A pox on thy house! Shows what you know; Tezuka had never actually seen the movie before he wrote the manga. Admittedly, he *was* inspired by the movie poster. And if it didn't make sense to you, it's probably because you tend to miss a lot of the nuances of a film when you watch it with your head Shoved Up Your Ass.
*giggles* Okay, that was really mean and I'm sorry. But how could I possibly resist such a great comeback!? Oh, snap! ;)

I love the comeback. That being said it's actually VERY similar in concept and in the overall scope to the original movie as well as storyline. Problem is the version that became anime and manga was completely based around some very odd thing when it was really the commentary on the working-class (and in Tezuka's, robot-class) revolution.
Certainly true, and Tezuka's manga and Rintaro's movie are pretty darn different in a lot of ways. For starters, Rocks not even in the manga and Tima is a boy! Since the manga's theme was respecting life in all forms, even robots, and the Fritz Lang movie was about class struggle, I think Rintaro and Otomo tried to combine elements of both.
You can't possibly dispute that the soundtrack was awesome though. I dare you!!
