This is one of I think four drawings I did for use by the Toronto worldcon in 2003. To my annoyance, they showed no interest in using any of them, preferring instead the services of the chairman's wife. (Partiality, you think?) It still rankles that I had virtually no part to play in the worldcon in my own hometown, the committee showing just about total disinterest in Toronto's own six-time Hugo nominated fan artist. Still, it's a piece I'm not unhappy to have drawn for whatever reason.

On top of Torcon III's own lacklustre performance, it was blessed with rotten luck, that's for sure. Mike Glyer, the fanGoH did make an appeance. He was merely late, because his family was held up at the border for some technicallity. Kelly Freas, as I recall, fell ill or broke a hip, or something that rule out attending at all.
Considering that the con chairman's wife was doing beavers, I don't think the furry stigma was the problem. Not being the chairman's wife might have had a little to do with it. The main problem, though, was the woman who was in charge of publications. It's a very long story. Putting it concisely, she wasn't a fan or familiar with fan publications. She wanted the "job" because it would look good on her resume, and the con treasurer was her Significant Other. She blew me off, even when I tried to talk with her in person, showed no interest in finding fan art for the con pubs, and in the end produced the least attractive and professional looking program book in years... decades! There is a five letter word that starts with a "b" that I commonly hear in the same sentence with this woman's name. She'd widely blamed for much of the concom's troubles behind the scenes.
