Note to mods: I made this POS you see above, I did not take it from anyone. I also own the original(sorta kinda it's a commission)
1) Find a beautiful piece of art
2) MS paint rape it (or some other media type)
3) Change the color scheme
4) Change at least one little detail
Remember! Step 4 is very important! That way the original owner can't get mad at you! It's different than what they did!
On step 2 you don't have to use MS paint, but be sure to butcher it no matter what medium you use!
This is mostly directed at dA, but I know this type of thing happens on FA too...... then the person will pretend(or over hype) to have one or more mental conditions to shield themselves with and attract white knights to defend them.

Mmm, I see this all the time as a person who also is active on DA. And this is quite the accurate deception.
I'll admit I do use bases as a reference for a pose or something, but if I do I draw it from scratch, I would never blatantly copy a base, and that's only bases that are made specifically for that, I could never defame a persons artwork, I wouldn't even use is as a reference unless it was made as a reference guide.
I'd also never sell anything I looked at a base for XD that's just dumb.
Also love the edit lol, looks exactly like what people do.

Hey, I'll admit that I'm not exactly up there with some of the more well-known historical artists, in fact not even close, but at least I don't steal artwork. Sure my work sucks, but it's not stolen. Why can't people just learn the one crucial lesson of plagiarism teachers repeat over and over and over and over in schools: submitting crappy work is better than submitting stolen work. It's as simple as that...there's no ifs ands or buts. There is a sensible and tasteful way to 'steal' work. It's called inspiration; you basically take someone else's work that you really like and alter it in your own special way to be more than 80% different and then give the creators credit for the original concept springboard. Inspiration does involve being creative and imaginative so even then it's not technically stealing. I may not be able to draw to save my life, but at least I don't trace. I rest my case. :3
It's ment to be 'white knight', definition 5 pretty much describes it http://www.urbandictionary.com/defi.....m=white+knight
Does this make me a thief? Say I'm having trouble figuring out the perspective on a vehicle, and I just can't get my mind wrapped around all those darn ellipses and the crazy chrome trim. I then get a print out from off the Internet, slap it down on my light table, then trace the image, BUT I add surface details, figures, and modifications to the basic design. Then I set everything in a background I drew for the design. Now I understand copying the photo or drawing directly is thievery, but is getting a little help wrong too? If this is true, I might have to do some "Time" for all those model kits I used to "Kitbash" up other designs.
But to answer your question, I'd say no.
I mean..... it's not like toyota cares if one of their millions of car photos is outlined and turned into a steam powered do-hicky? Nah
Will an artist care if you horribly trace a piece they slaved hours over and slap a few minor changes on? You better believe it!
