Today, October 11th is Wally's 5 month anniversary for being on this earth. Hes a happy and healthy pup at just over 15 pounds. He is my little man, my partner at work, my baby, my world. He will do anything for me and wants nothing but to be near me at all times.
He is also very smart with quite the few tricks under his little belt. So far he knows the basics of obedience, Sit, Down, Stay, Wait, Heel and responds to all of those with hand signals and/or verbal cues. He responds off leash to Hurry and Easy (fast and slow) when heeling. He knows High Five, Touch, Paw, Rollover and Stick-em-Up with hand signals and only verbal cues also.
We are working on Stand, Back, Spin, Bow and Go-Get-It meaning to grab an item I drop on the floor.
He truly is a blessing to have, I love him with all my heart.

I love corgis! My corgi turns 4 this month and I don't know what I would do without her. Great lovable dogs. Mine goes every where with me and sleeps under the covers with me at night and cuddles against my chest. I can talk to her like a person and name a toy and she will go get it or put it back in her basket if you ask her too. I honestly find that if you talk to them like a person they learn to understand what you mean. Like she knows car, bath, off leash, go out, up the stairs. Very smart dogs! But also be careful, they get arthritics young. I found out my poor pup developed it at the age of two :(.
Yup, I find too that starting to mention commands at first single words then in a full phrase he catches on quick! And I am aware of the health concerns, I'm keeping him fit with less weight on him than the breed standard states, and we're also working on stretches to help keep his back and core muscles strong.
yeah! i went to college and for a year and a half that i lived in the dorms i had to leave my pup with my parents. Which i regret. They mean well but they dont understand the breed and over fed her and gave her too many treats despite my requests. When i left home she was a healthy 30lbs (shes a big corgi, biggest in her litter) the vet told me she was perfect weight. Then i came home and took her back to the vet and she was 44lbs D:< and it turns out she now has to be medicated for arthritis. I got my own apartment that allows dogs and moved her in asap, I have managed to get her down to 39lbs and she is slowly loosing the weight again but the damage has been done :(
Awww! Thats so sad! I myself am a bigger girl and I'm trying to lose the weight too. But 15 pounds (what I want to lose) isnt too bad for a human, the equivalent for a small/medium breed is devastating. Wally's father was 28 pounds, so I want to keep him at 25 or so. Luckily he loves his own kibble as treats at home! Tho when we are out, I tend to use liver treats mixed in with his kibbles ^^
yeah, all i give mine is 3/4 a cup of origins dry food and a spoonful of wet food at night for dinner and i give her apples and ice cubes as treats. But like my mom was feeding her dinner 3x that and went through a big bag of treats a week with her AND always gave her some of her food. I almost had a heart attack when i heard!
actually good question here! I've never had a corgi, so I'm not too sure how much a healthy adult should be eating. Right now Wally gets 1/2 a cup a day 1/4th in the morning and at night, at 7 and 7. He also gets about 1/4 a cup the odd day as his treats during training sessions mixed in with a little soft rollover treats and freeze dried liver. He's currently eating Blue Buffalo. Whats your thoughts? Is he getting enough for a 5 month old? My vet informs me he's an ideal weight, maybe slightly under what a guy his age should be but I want to keep him trim. I appreciate your input! ^_^
honestly? i was told you should give them yogurt for breakfast to help with their bone issues(but mine doesn't like yogurt :( ) and only a cups worth of food for dinner and veggies, or forzen veggies in ice cubes as treats for them. also blue buffalo is a good dog food. i hope this helps! you really do gotta watch their weight! like i said mine got arthritis at two! and my cousins corgi got it at three. So i would bring him in every year for x-rays and be aware when he develops it to give him pills for it ASAP so it doesnt get worse!
I hope your Corgi is smarter than mine, mine's an idiot; prime example I left the kitchen for 2 minutes with pizza on the table and when I return it's all gone, not a scrap. Five hours later I found it, let's just say it's not the way I wanted to find said pizza (it's gooey liquid state). So yeah, pizza and Corgis don't mix lol.
Actually I'd say hes pretty smart lol. He taught you a lesson, do not leave food and dog unattended in one room. My dog will leave his bowl of food on the floor and will not touch it until I tell him "Okay!" He'll keep perfect eye contact on me even if I turn my back or leave the room, he'll opt to look at me instead of the food. This just took one day of training when he was 11 weeks old, and he still retains it, but I ask him to do it every single time.
My question to you is... How tall is your corgi or how short is your table! LOL My guy would never be able to reach anything on our kitchen counters, or table unless a chair was beside it or he got an assist from my St. Bernard!

That's the thing, he shouldn't have been able to reach it (sorry for the late reply btw). Contemplating it though, I think it was a joint effort on part of my white cat Skylar. Little devil is mischievous in watching things fall; think of him like the feline version of Sir Issac Newton. Still I think the cat knocked it off, dog ate it all up. Wasn't a scrap left.
LOL I so had the same thing! I had a cat who was a diabetic and would constantly be found eating bananas.. I couldn't figure it out, then I saw my St. Bernard used to sleep and push the kitchen chairs out, that then lead to my cat jumping onto the chair then table to eat bananas! Definitely partners in crime!
