Dwight Blackspell aka "Ravenscar" is the most infamous member of the Stormborn crew. Hailing from the countryside of Wales, he was born by a nobleman and a witch who raised him to the age of seven until his father took him on his castle where his half-sister Goldwinia was born. Dwight was sent to sea by the age of eight, and spent four years on English ships until he came to Spain, where he became student of a circle of aging professional duelists in Spain, who saw him as a good enough and worthy to carry their ancient lore of fencing out to the world. There he learned the deadly arts of La Destreza, the "Mystic Circle", a rare fencing style. However, he returned to Wales to take his sister away from their abusive father (who burned Blackspell's mother) and escaped with her to the New World. In Tortuga their ways splitted - Dwight (taking his mother's name Blackspell instead of his father's name then) became part of the Stormborn crew. The crafty and intelligent black coyote soon became one of Silver's boatswains, and almost his First Mate but the wolf decided to Kajito's favor (whom Blackspell brought to the crew back then). Goldie stood in Tortuga and worked in a tavern of a friendly couple of shepherd dogs.
However, Dwight is a manipulator and capable of committing cruel acts, and somehow his methods to get some money into the ship's bank didn't make him very popular. He found out that Jean is gay (by rolling in the hay with him once) and also tricked Kajito into a naughty game as his sex drive can hardly be controlled. Kajito became his rival from that day.
One night he returned to Tortuga and finds Neckbiter Jones and six of his men harassing his sister. Jones fooled the enraged coyote and took his right eye with a nasty slash. He then forced Dwight to witness the rape and molestation of his sister by Jones and his men, one after one, with the wolf beginning and ending the torture. He spared Blackspell but left him with a horribly scarred and disfigured Goldie in the tavern.
Unwilling to leave her in her misery alone, Blackspell stood with his sister, but her pride caused him a never ending and repeating nightmare: she took his blade and killed herself, right the moment where Kajito comes in to pick him up to the Stormborn. The white coyote blamed the black one for murdering and molesting his sister, and the trial of Captain Silver (with the captain, Kajito and intriguing Jean voting against him, Billy Standish voting for him and Finnegan Keeley staying neutral) he was abandoned from the Stormborn for lifetime. Blackspell vowed vengeance to Jones first and Kajito second then, stole the ship's bank when leaving the Stormborn and started to make his own crew.
Within a few years, he took the personality of Captain Ravenscar, who commanded the "Alexandria". Thanks to his hand chosen good men of his crew and his knowledge from his pirate time, they soon became a respected and feared band of pirate hunters.
Another crew member became the dutch otter girl Frauke Von Geest, which they found lost at sea on a wooden piece of her former ship.
Ravenscar reached his height of success by capturing pirate lord Black Bear and took him to Port Drake to get the bounty. But Commodore Destoole - who always hated the one-eyed coyote - demanded them to bring the bear to Black Rock prison. This is where the misery of Ravenscar started - and after some very bad turns he and Von Geest landed on the Stormborn again, marked as murderers of the gouvernor and other things. But lately - and thanks for saving both Silver's and Kajito's life - he became a respected member of the crew again, also because Kajito told the truth about what happened to his sister on that bloody night.
Blackspell is driven by madness and is obsessed to kill Jones for the death of Goldie. Lately Von Geest, with whom he shares a love relation, his anger and inner rage calmed down a bit, but it never got away completely. Whereas Silver (he's the only one to call the wolf Logan instead of captain) and Kajito (whose dirtiest secret is no secret to him anymore) gave up their grudge against him, Commodore Destoole, the devilish Benjamin Archer, Neckbiter Jones and Michel de Grammont would enjoy to see him dead by their hands.
He is smart, well educated, and a deadly master of fencing, his other skills include navigation, ship-handling, and interrogation. Thanks to his missing eye he is a poor gunfighter. His faith can be called "off the good path", and he is fascinated by the ferryman myth, with Charon bringing the dead across the river Styx.
Dwight Blackspell is both good and evil - on one side he has good intentions, but his ways to achieve his goals are sometimes cruel and cold-blooded. His sister's death made him mad and more dangerous than ever before - woe to those standing between him and Neckbiter Jones.
Thanks a lot,
lechevalier for the portrait of the story's anti-hero :)
