'Blaxploitation' is the semi-official title for a genre from the 70's and early 80's that featured a lot of what can be considered "cliche" or "stereotyped" elements of blacks, such as pimps, prostitutes, jive talk, funk, Afros and the like. Shaft was part of that, as was Cleopatra Jones.
