When I worked at Disney ages ago they had certain character that went water skiiing from time to time. The costumes were made to be a bit more bouyant for safety reasons. Also you wash you costume in water or in a washing machine so being in spring water really is no big deal. I took a lot a precautions my first time getting into water of any depth. Just to be safe. I found out being in water in a suit is a blast.
