I got my start in the fandom many years ago. Friendly folks, hanging about, giggling, eating pizza. Good times, fond memories. Costumes had only just started to really appear. PandaGuy approached me after MFM and was adamant that I could build something that he was unable to rent or find commercially at that time. I had made a sum total of 3 costumes and was still unsure of myself or how exactly to build one.
It is through the encouragement of people like John that I am where I am today. It's not something I ever forget or make light of. My life has been made better through knowing him, and the many folks like him still in the fandom. From wherever you are, John, look kindly down upon those of us still here, and we'll still hold you fondly in our hearts.

I think Bear did the original pencils for him. Sadly, many of my earliest photos are all but gone now.
Was all built under my parents staircase in my tiny lil art-spot. I think I had built my art table at about this time too. I remember that his was the last of the big block carved heads.

Wow. You've definitely come a long way. However, I always did like his Pandacoon suit. It was adorable!
You know, PG's departure does bring about one good thing. People are posting all these old photos of past cons and such. It's interesting to look back on them. Everyone has custom suits now, but back then, suits were much less common, and everyone got theirs from Marilou, or generic mascot companies. Those that custom built theirs were usually a small knot of people.
Things sure have changed in the past 10 years.

*hugs* Yeah, when I was told last night part of me didn't believe it, but part of me knew this was something bound to happen. He did good with the time he was given, something to aspire to for anyone. The outpouring of warmth and compassion at his passing is proof of that.
He had such a love for suiting, and he loved sharing it with people. When I lived back east, he lent me a raccoon suit to wear for a Halloween parade. I dolled it up with an old time saloon girl outfit I had, and he thought it was a riot. We both dubbed it Miss Kitty Raccoon. Man, good times.
Ran into him at FC this year, it was really cool to see him there, but at the same time it was hard to see how his worsening health was catching up to him and how frustrated it made him. :(
Yeah, he'd been dealing with Diabetes for a long, long time now. He had his darker moments, as we all do, but mostly he was upbeat, chatty, and yes, loved costumes and seeing people romp about and have fun when he was no longer able to himself. Those are the memories I keep of him. :)
Three weeks have passed since the news of Jon's departure from this world, and I'm still finding notes and reminders of just how many people he touched and influenced. I heard him joke about how maybe only two or three people would even notice if he had passed on. I hope now he realizes how ridiculously wrong he was.
