Would make sense. Notice how the blade is only sticking out of the front of the pumpkin and doesn't show up inside him. Totally fake.

Perhaps that's what the Pumpkins thought. But in the dark an evil yellow scrunchy could indeed be mistaken for a piece of fellow vegetation. Just long enough to get close.
