It's a Lightning Whelk (Busycon contrarium). These shells are considered as freaks of nature because they're sinistral (left-handed) instead of the usual dextral (right-handed). This is an evolutionary defense trait to protect it from predators like large crabs.
But, if you were to get a right-handed version of this shell, it would be worth its weight in gold.
