Actually, the P-51D was one of the easier WWII fighters to fly, mostly due to the fewer engine controls for the Packard 1650 (American version of the Rolls Merlin 60). Compared to the Corsair's P&W Double Wasp need for pilot input, the Mustang was cake to fly.
