I found this caterpillar on one of my apple tree saplings today. The only times I have ever seen one like this is on nature documentaries or in books, so i was quite excited to find this one today.

I have found out that this is a looper caterpillar and is the larvae of the Mottled Umber moth. The caterpillar gets its' name from the way it moves, this is what the book says; "When moving they bend their body in a loop, attatch the rear end and the extend the front part, thus moving freward in a series of loops" That was from Cahtto Nature Guides British and European Insects.
