Tantii is a technicolor orange ferret with white swirl patterns in his fur, making him resemble a creamsicle. His green, unblinking eyes and lack of a mouth betray his unnatural nature, and his mouthlessness is a source of much silliness and frustration on his part, given his exceptionally gluttonous personality. Tantii is a Tsukaima.

Tsukaima are manifestations of positive magic and emotions born from the dreams and thoughts of mankind, and thus they almost always have the forms of brightly colored, adorable fairy critters with innocuous personalities. Their magical powers vary, but they all have the ability to form contracts with humans (typically children between 10 and 16, girls preferred, but anyone with the potential is valid), and make them into Magical Girls and Boys! Mahou Kodomo!

Mahou Kodomo are mortals given the power to see and fight Youma, embodiments of dark magic and emotion that prey on normal people. Each Mahou Kodomo is associated with an 'element' (which can be anything; including esoteric concepts like cake or radioactivity), and have one extra bonus ultility power. These powers, along with their costume and weapon, are chosen by their unconscious mind, and the Contracter is usually surprised by what their minds supply them with. A Mahou Kodomo has a pendant or trinket they can never lose, give away, or discard which they use to transform into their Mahou costume. It's only in this form that lets them use their magic. To the outside world the effect is instantaneous, but the Mahou Kodomo experiences a full transformation sequence.

Youma exist out of phase from the rest of reality, in pocket planes called Nightmares, where they can devour unsuspecting humans without notice. Only Mahou Kodomo and Tsukaima can enter these realms and fight them, which resemble distorted, chaotic dream versions of the corresponding area. It is believed that Youma take their own shapes and the forms of their Nightmares from the dreams and thoughts of the local populace. When a Youma is defeated, it drops an Oblivion Seed, the most coveted prize of the Mahou Kodomo; for whoever gathers 13 of these black diamonds is granted a single Wish. Oblivion Seeds are stored inside a Mahou Kodomo's weapon/trinket.
