Since a lot of people were asking for a close-up on all the detail, here you go. I threw in a screengrab of it in outline view, too, to show off how little I had to actually draw for all those spirals. Art brushes are a great thing, and I will not ever ditch Illustrator for a drawing tool without them.

I always feel like most of these tricks I use are Illustrator 101. But the fact that I'm experienced with all these different approaches, and can pretty quickly say 'oh, I should do it this way', and not have to figure out all the little gotchas, is a lot of it.
