Custom paint job slots for the Hippocamp and Demon Dragon figurines are now open!
This guy was a commission for a custom painted Demon Dragon. The commissioner wanted a similar paint job to the (saturated) "blue roan" Hippocamp that I had on display. I remembered seeing others using pastels on model horses, so I dug out my pastels and put them to use. They make applying color to these guys so much easier! Blue Interference paint was also used on this guy, he has a subtle blue "flash" that's a bit hard to catch in still photos. To be clear, this particular paint job is not for sale. In fact, he's on his way home right now!
Blank casts and custom paints are up for sale in my store right now: http://wintersoulstudios.bigcartel.com/product/demon-dragon-figurine
Figurine Info:
*Scale/Size: About 5.5" tall, 5.5" long, 4.5" wingspan
*Sculpted in Sculpey, cast in a sturdy urethane resin.
*Option of four different horns/antlers.
*Edition: Currently undetermined. Most likely I'll keep it to one mold (30-50 casts).
*Customizing is allowed as long as you do not reproduce the piece - so feel free to try out different a different mane/spikes/etc. on these guys!
*Custom Painted slots are open!
*More info is located on the store page: http://wintersoulstudios.bigcartel......ragon-figurine
I've more figurine paints coming up, but back to work for now :3

No. Ooh! Unless the legends are true that his watering hole is the Blue Hole, then he'd fit right in. But I doubt he's the water type.
Ya know, to be perfectly honest: in all the depictions of the jersey devil I've seen in magazines (weird nj included), books, articles and such, I'd have to say that this would probably the BEST representation of a cryptic beast I've seen. Eeeexcept with a little criticism on the tail though lol.
Have any future products planned for the sculpture gallery?

Thank you much, I've been interested in the Jersey Devil since I was young, so that means a lot! Also, I'd be open to critique, if you see something with the tail :)
As for future sculpts, most definitely! The main one I have my heart set on for next spring is a mini free-standing Qilin (Kirin). I ran into some issues with casting the first, larger one, but still -really- want to see those scales done in multiple colors :D

Are you from jersey? What other cryptids interest you?
Well not so much critique as it is reflection off of actual accounts. Didn't other depictions of the JDevil have him have a thin tail with a spade like thing at the end? Just curious!
Oooh the Kirin. How long does each sculpture take you approximately to do the entire process?

Naw, I actually first read the story from a book of oddities that my dad had. I wish I knew what happened to it, that book had all sorts of neat reports from around the world. Hm, I think deep sea creatures and humanoid cryptids catch my interest the most right now, there's something wonderfully eerie about those groups. How about you, which cryptids have your top interest?
Ah, yes, I completely agree with that xD Actually, that was one of the visual details I was going back and fourth on for a while. For casting, visual flexibility, and balancing purposes, something was telling me to go thicker on the tail and do hair instead of point, (similar to my first JDevil sculpt). I figured it's going to be easier to carve down on one of the casts instead of finding out it later it doesn't cast/balance well and have to build onto a tail. I'll probably try the pointed tail out once I get to painting a cast with antlers :D

Wow. Was you dad into the "paranormal".
I do have an affinity for ocean dwellers myself. Humanoid, well I tend to take that a step further into what mainstream (which I don't follow) force teaches us that they don't exist. But yes, I do find that the humanoid types are creepy yet fascinating at the same time!
Hmmm, my top interest? I'm not too sure. One humanoid but quite rare is the "Flying Humanoid" phenomenon and Flying Brujas of Mexico. One other is Reptilian/Anthro based folk stemming from ancient lore of native American and ancient tribes across the globe. But Ancient anthro folk seems to be my top interest :3. I do have my own theory as to why we see them in random spurts or such.
Ahhhh, so the smaller spaghetti tail would have been more difficult to create based on balance of the sculpture?

I'm actually not entirely sure what he thought about the paranormal. One moment he would be telling our family bizarre stories, but if you ever tried to talk with him about it, he'd change the subject.
Very cool! I agree, ancient folklore of anthro folk is just fascinating. Yeah, it is an interesting trend that they seem to fade in and out of culture, I wonder why that is? Well, with the balance, more risky than difficult. In the sculpting stages, it was fairly easy to find the balancing point, but I wasn't entirely sure if the balance would be different in resin than it was in wire and sculpey.

Interesting. Maybe a "traumatic" event? Or doesn't know anything on it o_O. A MYSTERY!
Well I do have one hypothesis on why we don't see them as much as we used to. But it leads more into spiritual (not new age or religious fluff!) stuff based on personal observance and self theorizing. Unless you really want to hear it :B
Ahhh I understand then :)
I also have two questions:
1) did you mean to prop the sculpture on its side on the veery last image of the collage? Or did it just fall over and you were to lazy to pick it up? Lol
2) Im also wondering if you originally thought to make the wings bigger.

Possibly, a mystery indeed! Ah, neat, I'm always interested in hearing theories, if you're up for sharing :) For your questions: 1- Hehe, yep, it was intentional. Propping him onto his side so far has been the best way to take photos of those angles. 2- Bigger, as in larger than what they are on the actual sculpture?
2: well bigger in terms of proportion to the original cast.
My theory is that these beings were more "abundant" in ancient days because we were more open to believe in the true unknown. Until skepticism (and religion) came into play, many of them were driven underground or decided to move back somewhere in another dimension. Yes dimensions. These entities are STILL being reported worldwide ranging from the JDevil to chupacabra (not the dog.........), to reptilians and such. One entity surviving all these years is somewhat puzzling. Eventually they'll have to pass on. But then again time is relative. But one example is Sasquatch. There seem to be many types of Sasquatch worldwide. They have to breed. We don't see any families or nests. They have to be going SOMEwhere! But where??

For question 2, then nope, I don't think so. Ah, yes, I think I've heard a few theories going along the dimensional lines too. It is interesting in sightings how some of these creatures seem to vanish behind trees or into terrain that seems impossible for a normal animal to cross. Seems like ideas following the dimensional lines should be an interesting avenue for several of the strange phenomena fields, including for cryptids :D
well as i see it, they have to be going SOMEWHERE. Still if that's the case....searching for them would be MORE difficult than we previously knew. Of course...on the other hand...we may have to resort to EVPing, which if they are smarter than us should have speech like us and other ETs or such. Noises wont cut it i think...even for some beleivers.
