This illustration was inspired by 'Classic Trains', a TV series which was transmitted on Channel 4 in 1997. As the caption says, during an 8-hour journey (in this case, a freight service from Birmingham to Carlisle), the fireman (the fox in the foreground) would have to shovel a ton of coal every 40 miles (!) while the driver (the wolf in the background) just had his hand/paw on the regulator, sat back, and enjoyed himself! Is it any wonder that even in real life, you would have a fat driver but you never had a fat fireman?

I like this image as it's very simple, very honest, and all too true. My friend Jim wanted to try stoking a boiler during one of his visits to the UK, and the two fellows in the cab gladly let him do it. For once the fireman did need to do all the work, and Jim found out that shoveling a ton for every forty miles wasn't as easy as it looked like in the books.
