The premise of the story is Hanare and Alex getting into a rather sticky situation which leaves them transformed from flesh and blood mammals into these strange new forms. They are essentially part of the same plant and have various mind-control and transformational options available for use on other people.

These are mostly to create themselves some protectors and guardians as well as to spread their seeds and grow more of them. They are also driven to plant more of the pods that created them as well as to just live and experience life as new creatures of the woodlands.
