This is one of the USS Iowa's many ridiculously-steep stairwells, which are really more ladders than stairs. That I took this photo with the camera pointed almost straight down gives you an idea of just *how* steep.

Again, I reiterate that this was the only practical way to build stairs on the Iowa class Battleships, but they're REALLY awkward to climb and descent.
